“Buddy Daddies” 2023 anime

Really good watch despite the awkward title. Strong blend of action and comedy, with the main focus being about two gangsters who form a found family with a child they rescue, and their efforts to get away from their criminal gang so they can live a peaceful life together.

Though there is some past romance for one of the characters, still recommending this show due to how they prioritize their found family bond. It may or may count as a QPR for the parental figures; that’s up to the viewer.

“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (2022)

Submitting this due to the strong themes of ‘family is what you make it.’ While there is a reconnection between a character and an ex of his, the story focuses on trust being rebuilt between them and doesn’t tack on a conventional romantic happily-ever-after.

While this film is not 100% romance-free, it is still aro-friendly due to the film clearly measuring platonic, familial, and romantic bonds as being equally significant. The film also does a great job in making clear that you don’t need to explain why your family is what it is / has become, whether it be through adoption, building trust again with someone from your past, or even with someone you just met.

“My Prince Edward” (2019)

An aro-friendly film that thoroughly deconstructs societal expectations of marriage, romance, and happiness. The main character is in a relationship with the town golden boy, the metaphorical ‘prince.’ It is heavily implied she is only with him because everyone expects her to be, and the whole film is a buildup to her realizing that it is okay to not want to be married or date anyone.

Pretty much any song by Tom Lehrer is aro-friendly, as even his ‘romance’ songs are actually parodies or deconstructions. He specializes in dark humor and social satire, and amazingly was actually popular in the 1950s (though most of his songs weren’t allowed to be recorded or on the radio until much later). A pretty badass individual

A great Finnish horror film set around Christmas. Romance-free. Has a few actors from another film listed on this site, “Big Game”, working together here. A very different tone (as this is more horror than action), but still fun

Romance-free thriller film about a trucker who starts to realize that he is being slowly but surely set up to take the fall for a serial killer, and must prove his innocence.

Small note that the main characters pet dog that he travels with makes it to the end of the film

“Fight on! Yeo Manager” by Mun-Eo Do.

A webtoon that deconstructs the romance genre, specifically the bl subgenre.  Does a good job of parodying and deconstructing how the tropes in an ‘office romance’ type novel would play out in reality, as well as calls out several toxic behaviors that go wrongly unquestioned in this subgenre (the importance of consent, making sure people are on the same page, understanding the time and place for something, etc).

The main female character does not have any romance and is typically portrayed as the only one with common sense. She becomes friends with a coworker who ordinarily would be the main character instead of her (this is a very meta book), and helps him get away from a toxic person he never wanted to become involved with in the first place (it was his boss and he didn’t feel that he could say no…).

Not romance-free, but aro-friendly due to the main character and the deconstruction of toxic rom-com tropes.

Can be found online. A shortcut is finding its official website listed on 'baka updates’, then using a translation app on it.
