Jay opens his eyes to a vast field shrouded in fog. He shouts out to no one in particular, but his voice echoes and vanishes after mere moments. The light grey fog clings to him, making it hard to see even his own hand stretched before him.
As he marvels at the opacity of the death trap, a glint of light pierces through the darkness. Was that, another him? Jay whips his head from side to side, when the familiar sting of a papercut consumes his attention. A straight, thin gash stretches across the back of Jay’s hand, kicking him out of his strangely sedate manner. The clone. Where was it? What is its relation with a.. Knife?
A cool breath precedes a deep voiced whisper in his ear, “Why does it have to be related?”
The fog begins to move, a wind, the voices, someone, something.
More voices emerge from the fog, “Everything is related”
“From the moment you arrived, everything has been a hint to something greater”
“Or something more sinister,”
Another clone flashes in his field of vision, smiling. So he follows, trying to escape the voices and grab whoever put that vision before him.
“Can you see it?” “Do you see it?” “Look,” “Can you see?” “Look closer,” “What about now?”
As the voices grow in number, so too do the gusts of wind. Thin gashes continue to appear and mark his skin but he doesn’t seem to notice. He can’t feel pain anymore.
He finds nothing in his search through the endless fog. Yet the whispers subside, a low indistinct hum left in the real world while he retreats into his mind. Jay’s eyes fly open, his answer found.
“I.. see you,” Jay’s voice drops, tired and defeated. He stares into the fog, but the person he sees isn’t there. He won’t see them again.
But you will.
“Good,”
That seems to be the nail in the coffin, as what looks like dozens of large glass axes swing towards the stunned boy. Dozens of similarly stunned Jays stare back at him, imprisoned in the glass of the axes.
What was once whole is soon reduced to jagged pieces of flesh as a faulty glass blade smacks the motionless boy backwards. The fall breaks apart the pieces, aptly accompanied by the shattering of the faulty glass blade.
The shard like pieces of a boy that lived to replicate the image of others, replicate the glass beads and jagged pieces of the mirrors that ended him.
As you all argued amongst each other, coming to an unfortunate conclusion, the bells of the church echoed throughout, and a soft, ghostly voice echoed back your choice, sending a chill up everyone’s spines.
“The one guilty of this crime is Jayendra Mishra. They shall be punished for their sins.”
