Forbidden / Jaylah & Sasha
Times were changing for the Croatan tribe and not for the better. White men cam on the land and every new day felt darker than the last. The leader of Jaylah's clan, Chogan, had spoken to the leader of this group and was promised peace but it did not feel peaceful at all. They were slowly killing the forests and taking over pieces of land with no regard for the tribe. Jaylah hated it and felt it in her core with loss of her home.
She had been warned about going to close. Jaylah was a medicine woman in the tribe, with the ability to heal and draw memories from people. To the Croatan's she was a healer, a priestess of sorts but to the white man, she would be deemed a witch. They would kill her. Chogan spent enough time negotiating with these Europeans to know they did not believe in the power of nature but in what they called the one true god. They carried a book and read from it and saw nothing in nature that pleased them more. It was confusing to the young woman and she agreed that staying away was best for everyone.
The problem was the newcomers continually showed up in areas where Jaylah needed to gather herbs for her healing salves and for the sweat lodge. Today would be no different. The river was the only place to find what she needed to properly help Anoki but as Jaylah approached, she heard the sound of a woman singing. The song was low, almost as rhythmic as the water. Scared and curious, Jaylah tucked behind a small group of laurels, peering through the leaves to catch a glimpse of the songbird. Alone in the water, a woman with skin as white as milk looked as if she were bathing.
She was the most beautiful thing Jaylah could think she had ever seen. There was something about the way she moved, her voice and the serenity that came with the moment. Jaylah was so wrapped up in the moment she did not even realize her footing was amiss. Before she knew it, she'd slipped down the bank and made a rather loud splash in the water. Gasping for air she stood, feeling ashamed for having spied. "I am sorry, I was only looking for sourwood!"
