Tabi shoes originated in Japan as split-toe socks, designed to be worn with thonged sandals like zöri. In 1922, brothers Tokujiro and Shöjirõ Ishibashi introduced jika-tabi, a version with rubber soles that remains popular in Japan today.

Maison Margiela, inspired by the traditional Tabi design, debuted his take on the shoe in 1989. In 2021, he collaborated with Reebok to release the Reebok Classic Leather Tabi x Maison Margiela. These shoes reimagine the Reebok Classic through a minimalist lens, with the Margiela logo and signature split toe as the primary departures from the original design.
