Horror movies everyone hates but I love: Child’s Play 3, Alien 3, Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, Jason Goes to Hell, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, Subspecies, Waxwork, Puppet Master 5, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, The Rage: Carrie 2, Ghoulies II, The Night Flier, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, Shocker, House II: The Second Story, Amityville II: The Possession, Twilight Zone: The Movie (people are very quick to condemn it now because of the accident), Castle Freak, 976-EVIL, Village of the Damned ‘95, Stir of Echoes

Horror movies I hate but everyone loves: Hate’s a strong one here, for the record. But: Hostel, Cabin Fever, Saw III-VII, Wrong Turn (the first one), The Amityville Horror ‘79 (don’t hate, enjoy watching, but it ain’t a classic), Dracula ‘31 (again, it’s def. watchable, but of the Universal classics it’s the least good), House by the Cemetery (only of the Gates of Hell trilogy I’ve never warmed up to, but who knows what could happen), The Ring

Horror movies I really should have seen by now: Blood Simple, Diabolique, Cat People, Pacific Heights, Shallow Grave, Blood and Black Lace (and actually most other Bava movies), The Stepfather, The Tenant, The Vanishing, The Sentinel, Black Sunday, Don’t Look Now (I’ve read it, though)

With Independence Day coming, I figured I'd ask... have you seen Uncle Sam? Thoughts?

Late response! I just saw Uncle Sam recently for an article I did for the 4th. It’s cheap, it’s goofy, but it’s better than Jack Frost and at least has a couple of mad geniuses behind it (William Lustig and Larry Cohen)

This is by far my least favorite of the Nightmare films as well. It’s just so tonally unbalanced. The style is so gothic yet Freddy is so goofy. The characters are so sad and morose, all of them, and yet Freddy is at his most spastic and absurd. The more I watch it, the more the deaths look less and less like the actions of a sadistic dream stalker and more like misguided attempts to cheer those poor fuckers up.

I discovered the Puppet Master series through an ad for these action figures and I was hooked on their designs alone. From there it became a pretty feverish mission to track down both the toys (which were not available in my fairly rural area) and the movies (which were all out of print at the time) and it took a couple years, but on Christmas morning when I was--I think--ten, I woke up to every one of the figures in the series. It was Heaven.

My interest was rekindled enough to make this post, because my roommate brought home six of the toys--all in their boxes--the other day that someone had just given him.

Puppet Master was one of my gateway horror movies. I had seen some of the Fridays and Nightmares before that, but something about that movie really struck a chord with me as a kid. I'll admit the first is slow, but I like how quirky it is and the death scenes are awesome. While I like the first and third the best, the second one is the best at being a straightforward horror movie. Not too much plot, little more gore, puppets do a lot more in it.

I had trouble with the hair on my Michael Myers mask. I think they use camel hair. It's a great mask, but it was shedding, haha.

Yes, the hair on the Henrietta mask in particular was horrendous. After filming the review some more hair went all over the place. Just awful.
