"Previously unreleased SPIRITUAL JAZZ from NORWAY recorded in ASKER CHURCH in the mid-seventies. Playful rhythmical jazz with MODAL and LATIN influences band members from THAT’S WHY, RUPHUS & EN TIEMPO"
Jan Simonsen Quintet was an active mid-seventies, norwegian jazz group, drawing up influences from Herbie Hancock to McCoy Tyner the group's very rhythmical approach fell positive with the crowd and landed them regular gigs at the famous Club7 venue in Oslo, the group also performed at Molde Jazz 1976. Organic Pulse Ensemble - Bamboo Noodles - a new EP from one-man spiritual jazz band Gustav Horneij, released on 10" 45 rpm vinyl by Jazzaggression Records
It was inevitable — finally an OPE release on Jazzaggression Records! And what better format than the 10-inch EP? Our favorite. Just enough music, nimble and handy. Like many others, we’ve been following the one-man spiritual jazz phenomenon that is Gustav Horneij. Just like our contemporaries at labels we admire — RR GEMS, Ultraääni, and others — we knew it was only a matter of time. Imagine jamming with yourself: start with drums and bass, get that backbone locked in. Then layer on the melodies — reeds, flute, strings — one by one. Overdubbing while listening back, tweaking, repeating: “Nope… that didn’t work… okay, try again… now we’re getting somewhere.” For timeless hours, Gustav immerses himself in instrument after instrument — playing each in his own way, feeling out what sticks and what doesn’t. It’s total expression — many voices within one player. Now, six albums in, we’ve got an EP with four deep cuts composed around his bamboo flutes: “Instant,” “Udon,” “The Deepest Bowl,” and “Picante Beef.” The title? Bamboo Noodles — a low-carb alternative maybe, but don’t get it twisted: all the flavors and inspirations are here. Eastern vibes. Infectious bass lines. Distant harp textures. Melodic licks. It’s been my personal soundtrack lately — and we think you’ll dig it too. Pressed as a limited edition 10-inch vinyl — 500 copies only, individually numbered and plastic-sealed. Cut at 45 RPM for maximum detail, sweet highs, and less groove distortion. OPE releases fly fast, and this one won't be re-pressed, so get it while it's available.
Mu Quintet’s exhilarating ‘Summit’ amalgamates rich compositions and vibrant improvisation, pushing small ensemble boundaries to dynamic effect. The Leeds outfit captivates with intricate melodies and rhythms on highlights ‘Miss B’ and ‘Maya’s Mood’ while’ Diogenes Pot’ intrigues as a powerful opener, setting the avant-garde tone. Props to Jazzaggression for giving this previously digital-only album a much-deserved vinyl release.
GREG FOAT & EERO KOIVISTOINEN Feathers LP Snippets - Greg Foat never rests
“Enjoy Foat's rhythmic mastery, jazz-infused mood, and cosmic synths, accompanied by Finland's finest, including the legendary saxophonist Eero Koivistoinen.” Greg Foat travels to Finland, teaming up once again with the Jazzaggression label to unveil "Feathers." Building on the success of "Gone to the Cats," the collaborative trio date with Aleksi Heinola and Teemu Åkerblom, "Feathers" follows a similar formula while expanding its musical horizons. "Feathers" introduces an even larger cast of Finnish musicians, including the notable inclusion of Finnish saxophone legend Eero Koivistoinen on tenor sax and the talented Ilmari Heikinheimo on percussion. Recorded over a stormy long weekend in mid-October 2022 at Jazzaggression's in-house Studio Pelto, the album strikes a balance between precomposed tracks and spontaneously created pieces. Devotees of Greg's earlier releases are in for a treat, as "Feathers" skillfully merges his signature atmospheric touch with an expanded synthesis of sounds. Imagine the legendary Eero Koivistoinen infusing his prowess into the monumental jam "Riding the Breeze," while tracks like "Feathers" and the contemplative "A Prayer for Love" showcase a downtempo elegance that lingers in the air. Yet, "Feathers" doesn't stop there—it delivers captivating jazz classics as well. Experience "The Sandpiper," a bluesy minor jam reminiscent of the golden era of CTI Albums, or delve into the engaging rhythms of "Inconsequential Narrative" and the thematic intrigue of "As the Crow Flies." A particularly enchanting aura envelops "When All Is Said and Done." Its ephemeral minimalistic essence captures a spontaneous late-night allure, compelling the engineer to "Keep the tape rolling..."—the kind of magic that can only be conjured in the moment. With "Feathers," Greg Foat brings his animalistic trilogy of albums on Jazzaggression to a triumphant close, possibly delivering his most exceptional recording yet. Album comes limited to 1000 copies, sealed with hype sticker and hold a coloured insert with photos documenting the recording, with info and digital download of album.
Gisle Røen Johansen - Morrasol - high-octane fusion sandwiched between heavy doomjazz intro & outro (Jazzaggression)
Heaven and earth are in motion with the debut album from composer and saxophonist Gisle Røen Johansen (b. 1968) an active voice on the Norwegian jazz scene since the mid-nineties. Known for his expressive tone in groups like Element and Jazzmob, Kveldsragg is the first release under his own name. The album features top players from the nordic jazz currents including members from Bushman’s Revenge and Element; Even Hermansen on guitars, Rune Nergaard on Electric Bass and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten on Acoustic Bass and ECM signed Gard Nilssen on drums. With special guests Bob Hoffnar on pedal steel, wordless vocals by Mona Julsrud and vocals, lyrics by Harald Tusberg Jr.
The melodic tour-de-force of Kveldsragg that occupies the whole first side showcases Johansen’s post-bop background, in a multi-layered harmonical approach. While the B-side Morrasol is a new dawn, the album finishes with the haunting and beautiful voice of Harald Tusberg Jr. who’s lyrical tribute to the deciesed fellow musicianJon Klette will leave you mesmerized.
