Grover Washington JR Mister Magic: one of the best Jazz Funk singles and albums ever. This commercially successful record pissed off some jazz purists but for early B Boys and fans of jazz funk its one the the high water marks of its genre. The band on this recording is amazing with the legendary Harvey Mason keeping the groove and Eric Gale playing guitar snd soling in this beast of a record. This was also a roller skating classic as well as early sample material for songs like A Touch Of Jazz by Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince and my favorite Lifes a Bitch remix by Buckwild. Grover had a plethora of funky jams like Knucklehead, Black Frost and Hydra amongst others. He had a sweet tone and a nasty groove. He and the 70s mainstream jazz acts like Bob James and Idris Mohammed recorded for labels@such as CTI and Kudu and defined a genre that was embraced during the golden age of sampling. Nothing wrong with populist jazz in my book this stuff grooves and for me thats enough. He was a masterful tenor player and helped bring back the soprano sax back to the forefront of jazz in the mid 70s.Grover passed in 99 in NYC unfortunately. He was believed in his home town of philly often playing at 76er games and was a close friend of DR J’s. He was a classy cat for sure love me some Grover Washington Jr. This is a feel good Friday record for sure! #SuperDiscoBreakin’ #MisterMagic #JazzFunkRules (at Los Angeles, California)
