Visioneers-Mystic Brew: This cover of Ronnie Fosters Tribe Called Quest sampled jam is genius. Had it by the turntable and realized I had never posted it. Got hipped to The Visioneers by Benji B not knowing it was Marc Mac from 4 Hero who I also missed the first time around being American. Marcs a genius of the highest order. His cinematic covers/ reinterpretations of classic Funk and Jazz tunes are gorgeous. He makes these classic his own which is a tough order. Really dig this one right here. The whole Visioneers album including the epic cover of Apache is wonderful. Go cop the vinyl if you can find it. Booker T and The MGs Hip-Hugger: one of the grooviest instrumental soul record of all time. Sampled by everyone my favorite being the promo number 2 by the Jungle Brothers featuring a young Qtip who bodied that joint as well as being used by Ice Cube and Pooh for Nappy DugoutHeavy D and The Boys for Dont Curse and my man ODB for Hippa to the Hoppa amongst others. This funky slice if Memphis soul laid down by the legendary Memphis Group is just a extraordinary example of the bands over all groovyness. Al Jacksons swing is for me unparalleled he is my all time favorite drummer and Steve Croppers guitar work on this is amazing. Just a great feel good funky tune. I played his the other night and people went off, this song knocks right next to a hip hop record a testament to the mix done more than 20 years before the records that sampled it were even made. The Meters are the only instrumental that comes close to the MGs though the MGs played on way more hits including joints by Rufus Thomas, Otis Redding, and every Stax artist ever basically. They had a ton if hits including Green Onions, Soul Limbo, and the legendary dance floor knocker Melting Pot which some would say helped invented House Music. Ll Cool J Mama Said Knock You Out: This was Uncle L’s “comeback” after the Walk with a Panther debacle. He grabbed up Marley Marl , ran though a lot of classic breaks inckuding Sky Trip To My heart ( the ahh ahh ahh part) Funky Drummer and bang made one of the best records of his career. This one right here bee. On my want list for a minute after I heard @breakbeatlou rock it one time. LL never get mentioned as one of the greats he should be. When he cane out he was Run DMC 2.0. I. Ink all the records for the ladies hurts his all time great ranking. The Sons: You Can Fly- Used countless times by everyone from Snoop to ODB this not that rare but that funky break always works. I used it myself more than once, not sure who used it first, Always felt Tribe used it best for Award Tour. Forgot I had the 45, was going through a box today and was oh shit I forgot about this one. TLC-Creep: Not my usual wheel House but I did i deed buy this cassette when it came out. Loved the Slick Rick sample as well as the drums which were very boom bap. My lady at the time use to bump this, all the ladies did. The song is also smart lyrically. I liked the initial wave of Hip Hop R n B though it ran its course ad nauseam. Luther Vandross -Dont You Know That: The most influential male R n B singer of the 80s dont @ me. He changed everything. He for better at worst was the first to me at least official R n B Singer. I say this because he had a ton of soul but wasn’t a Soul singer. Let me pontificate: He was tone wise crystal clear, clean as a whistle almost shiny. His range was crazy and his delivery pristine. An entire school of RnB singers emulated him tone wise. He was a genius vocally, everything sounded effortless. He was also one of the best singers live I ever saw. Watched him hand Anita Baker her ass once upon a time why she headlined remains a mystery. Also saw him at the Garden with @faithnewman19 then we went to the Latin Quarters after in I wanna say summer 87 but maybe 88. That show was amazing, women were literally crying in there Sundays best’ holding glowing fake roses on a brutally hot August Friday evening. Also saw him and Maze at Radio City (Maze got him that night sorry). Man he sang his sometimes skinny sometimes chubby ass off. Love his music. He was the R n B singer for us Golden Era Hip Hop teenagers plain and simple. Love those first two LPs man I have never stopped playing em, never will.
