Pianist Thelonious Monk at The Village Gate , Oct. 1968 . Photo by Bernard Gotfryd.
French writer Roland Barthes talked about the punctum as the detail in a photograph that makes it all click and resonate. It is an element of mystery and revelation, conveying meaning and aesthetic satisfaction. In this case, there are just too many — the light from the door framing Monk’s bulk, the sign at the back, the open upright piano, the shadow of the lightbulb near the ceiling, the nonchalant cigarette and the fat ring, the fully-buttoned double-breasted jacket or simply Monk’s patient and piercing gaze.
