“Charisma” by #LeeMorgan was recorded on September 29, 1966, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Morgan on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto, Hank Mobley on tenor, Cedar Walton on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Although it was recorded in 1966, it wasn’t released until May of 1969. With a powerful frontline of Morgan, McLean and Mobley and the stellar rhythm section of Higgins, Chambers and Walton makes this an outstanding session. Not sure why Blue Note Records decided to shelve this for three years because this is one of my favorite Lee Morgan albums. This is one of my favorite Morgan sessions with my favorite piece of the session “These Are Soulful Days”. Much of the album’s beauty is how Morgan and J-Mac blend there sounds together. Lee’s machine gun style mellows against J-Mac’s sharp alto edge. Back in the day #DougCarn was a fixture in my house with albums like “Infant Eyes”, “Spirit of the New Land”, “Revelation” and “Adam's Apple” as my older sister used to play his music all the time. Once I started my collection I added these classics to my collection as well, but by the late 70’s my music world had shifted to Fusion where most of my album buying shifted to as well. I wasn’t familiar with the @jazzisdead series until I noticed my daughter had a few in her collection. Now I’m playing catchup with the series. This isn’t my first of the collection, but the first that I’m posting since it arrived in the mail a few hours ago. It’s a 2-LP 45 RPM copy that sounds awesome. Hopefully I can get my hands on the entire collection before they are out of print. Today I’m celebrating the great #TheloniousMonk birthday by listening to a lot of his great works. What I didn’t realize that most of my collection of him comes in the CD form as I have just about everything he’s recorded on CD, but hardly any in vinyl. As great a Monk was and as big as my vinyl collection has grown over the years, I hardly have any vinyl of him to show for it. I have a few OJC’s, but my favorite is my Speakers Corner reissue of “It’s Monk Time” featuring Monk on piano, Charlie Rouse on tenor, Butch Warren on bass and Ben Riley on drums. Although it features three standards it also features three Monk originals with “Brake’s Sake” being my favorite of this session, I have to keep reminding myself that “Epistrophy” is only on the CD and not the album. This was also Monk’s third of six albums recorded on Columbia Records. This isn’t a bad recording, but definitely not one of Monk’s best. “1984” by the great #YusefLateef recorded on February 24, 1965, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Lateef on tenor, flute and oboe, Mike Nock on piano, Reggie Workman on bass and James Black on drums. It was release on Impulse! Records in 1965. The album’s first two pieces on side 1 “1984” and “Try Love” with the moaning and improving makes you wonder if this album is headed into something more in tune with an Ornette Coleman or Trane piece. But then the 3rd tune on side 1 “Soul Sister” featuring Lateef’s deep blowing soulful sound, seems to get this album back on track and a beautiful album at that. My favorite piece on here is the Duke Ellington piece “Warm Fire” although George Nock’s beautiful solo on “Love Waltz” the last tune on side 1 kind of makes you forget about the first two tunes on this side. “Grantstand” by the great #GrantGreen was recorded on August 1, 1961, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Green on guitar, Yusef Lateef on tenor and flute, Jack McDuff on organ. Al Harewood on bass and Ben Tucker on bass. Although the liner notes say this is his 3rd Blue Note session it was actually his 5th as both his first recording “First Session” and “Sunday Mornin’” were released after this recording with “first Session” not seeing the light of day until 2001. This is an Analogue Productions, 2-LP, 45RPM, reissue but compared to my blue labeled UA version you can tell the difference with Brother Jack McDuff’s bass line on his B2 as this copy sounds a little clearer and fuller. It almost sounds like it’s mic’d a little different, but I give my hats off to Kevin Gray and his masterful mastering. This is also Yusef Lateef in a different groove away from his Eastern tonalities as he’s in a more swinging, hard-bop, soulful groove. I was so used to listening to this classic on my Jukebox in my car that I didn’t realize “Green’s Greenery” was a CD extra and not included on the album. “Clubhouse” by #DexterGordon was recorded on May 27, 1965, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Gordon on tenor, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Barry Harris on piano, Bob Cranshaw and Ben Tucker on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Two days after this session, Gordon was back in the studio recording “Getting’ Around” with the same lineup except Freddie Hubbard replacing him with vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. @BlueNoteRecords deciding to shelve this session in favor of “Getting’ Around” and not releasing this classic until 1979 when the legendary Michael Cuscuna discovered “Clubhouse” while combing through the vaults of Blue Note Records which produced the LT Series (Classic Blue Note). I remember purchasing the LT version with a couple other white covered Classic Series thinking it was something new by Dexter only to find out it was recorded in 1965. This is a Tone Poet Series reissue that sounds superb which is still available on the Blue Note website.
