I just found out that John Church Hamilton was the first one to name one his kids Laurens and thus starting a new name tradition within the family tree and idk knowing that he is the one who read through and edited his dad’s letters (and wrote the famous note “must not publish the whole of this”) and thus had a very extensive knowledge of their relationship and then deciding to pay tribute to this important person from his dad’s life is just kinda throwing me into a loop

It’s totally interesting but also, I agree, confusing. I like to think that JCH did that because he was aware of Hamilton and Laurens’s true relationship and wanted to honor it in some way, but knew he couldn’t publicly. You’ll notice that JCH (nor any other of Hamilton’s kids for that matter) named their children “Meade,” “Gilbert,” or “Morris,” again leading me to speculate this was because JCH knew that Laurens’s relationship with Hamilton was different from Meade or Lafayette or Gouvernuer Morris. (And you’re also right that it became sort of a tradition-- I counted several Laurens’s on the Hamilton family tree on Wikipedia.)
