Santa Clara University School of Law - JD Program and Up System
A graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara, Sara Townsend holds a bachelor of science in ecology and evolution and a bachelor of arts in environmental studies. Sara Townsend also attended the Santa Clara University School of Law, where she earned her juris doctor (JD). Founded in 1911 and located in the heart of Silicon Valley, Santa Clara Law offers students pursuing legal careers the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge in a variety of areas. One of the stipulations for graduation with a JD from the school requires students to earn four upper division proficiency (UP) points. To receive points, students must earn a C+ or better in designated upper division courses. The school presently offers 11 UP-eligible courses. Of these, the Constitutional Law I and II, Legal Profession, and Evidence courses are required. Other UP-eligible courses include Business Organizations, Community Property, Real Estate Conveyancing, and Criminal Procedures. The UP system is not applicable to students during their first year of study, and transfer students may receive UP points for credits completed in their previous programs if eligibility requirements are satisfied.

The Moot Court for all JD Program Students
Each summer, students studying for their Juris Doctorate Degree enroll in the college’s Moot Court elective where they will draft briefs and argue a criminal appeal based on an actual trial transcript while under the guidance of seasoned faculty members. Moot Court is a requirement for all students participating in the JD Program here at COL. Students from COL competes against their counterparts from the University of West Los Angeles School of Law.
