Here it is folks! I spent months looking for a swing out tire carrier for my 19″ Jeep Compass Trailhawk. Us Compass owners know how hard it is to find any off-road like aftermarket parts for our build. Sure, there is a bunch of DIY videos out there but I don’t own a welding machine nor do I have the skill for it. I do in fact have a power drill. With a little drilling and tightening of bolts, I was able to make my own DIY tire carrier with different parts. 

First, you will need 2 parts.

1. Swing Away Carrier: $350

Depending on your hitch pin, I would recommend getting yourself a set of these drill bits to drill out a hole to push the swing out a little closer to your bumper so it is not sticking out too far.

I also ended up drilling two 5/8″ holes to relocate my license plate onto the lower part of my rear bumper. I am in CA, so my bracket did have to have a light. You can get my bracket here: https://amzn.to/3n21rPI 

Total cost of this budget build for me was under $500 in comparison to spending $1000+ on swing away carriers.

I’ll update this post once I get the time to go outside and take everything apart so I can show you visually what I did and how it was all put together. (should be within this week).

TRAILER HITCH SET UP

I opted out of going the Mopar route to install a trailer hitch on my 19″ Jeep Compass TH because 1. It cost more for parts and 2. I didn’t want to pay a shop for labor nor did I want to install it myself. It was easier for me to just take it to my local U-Haul and have them install one for me. 

I got the wiring package as well.

TOTAL COST FOR PARTS AND LABOR: $382.84

This hitch install was much needed since I needed more storage space. Went to Harbor Freight and picked up a cheap cargo carrier for $49.99 (pictured below):  https://www.harborfreight.com/300-lb-capacity-atv-cargo-carrier-69858.html
