Amazing Grace (2018)
Originally scheduled for release in 1972 but shelved due to production issues, Aretha Franklin’s live concert at Los Angeles’ New Temple Missionary Baptist Church is now playing in select theatres. If you’re a fan, it’s a can’t-miss event. If you like religious hymns, it’s a must-see. If you having a passing interest in music this documentary has much to offer. There’s such electricity in the footage it’s like experiencing the talented singer in person, in her prime.
Usually, when a documentary is described as “moving”, it’s because it instills a desire to act or change our behavior. Alternatively, the images shown may be so emotional we're compelled to scream, cry or rage. Amazing Grace moves you in a way I’d never seen before. You’ll be fighting not to get up from your seat, raise your hands, and clap. I could many of the viewers around me wanting to go ballistic but unable to out of courtesy for those sitting behind them. I always roll my eyes when I hear people clap at a movie (unless the cast is present, of course). Who’s listening? The projectionist? There’s no chance Aretha is hiding in the back row with a raincoat and a pair of sunglasses so it'd be extra silly to applaud her but that’s the power of this footage. You need to contribute to what’s happening and since your voice is but empty air compared to hers, stomping your feet, shedding tears, whooping or clapping seems like the least you can do.
Obviously you’re going into Amazing Grace, for Aretha, which I think is where you might be disappointed. The Queen of Soul barely acknowledges the audience, though I can't fault her for it. Did you see those beads of sweat and tears running down her face? She’s giving this performance her all. To suggest she “isn’t doing enough” is inconceivable. This is why praise towards Reverend Dr. James Edward Cleveland is owed. He emanates charisma every time he appears on camera. He makes this event feel even more like an event by emceeing the concert.
This movie is all about the music and the audio is fantastic. Every time Aretha opens her mouth to sing, you’re surprised by her voice. Every time a number ends, you’re shocked. No matter how much you listen, you can never get acclimated. This is where the production - crude as it may seem at times - works in the doc’s favor. I wouldn’t call the camerawork anything special. The bits where we see technical difficulties, where the camera lingers on Mick Jagger or is awkwardly placed, when people in the audience look into the lens remind you this wasn’t staged, that it was real and that you were there too. Well, you weren’t really, but it feels like you were. (Theatrical version on the big screen, June 18, 2019)
