“Tank Man” temporarily stops the advance of a column of tanks on June 5, 1989, in Beijing. This photograph (one of four similar versions) was taken by Jeff Widener of the Associated Press.

Jeff Widener and his photo of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, known in China as the June Fourth Incident (六四事件). His published photo is extremely well known but a similar, wider angle version of that moment has recently surfaced (top), which further underscores the staggering but simple bravery of that one man and his shopping bags.
