Some Jem archive documents just dropped
Now, as many fans of the series know, "Jem" was originally going to be called just "M". It would allow a tie in to MTV, and would make her more "M"ysterious (You see what they did there?) with "Jerrica" originally planned to be "Misty" or "Morgan".
However it was not to be, probably when it was pointed out that naming your show after a single letter of the alphabet means it can't be trademarked properly, and we ended up with "Jem"
What is perhaps lesser know is that whilst the music for all the songs in the show were composed by the team of Ford Kinder and Anne Bryant, the lyrics for all the songs in the series were written by Barry Harman, a bone fide Broadway lyricist.
Except, as it turns out, for the Jem theme, which Kinder and Bryant wrote the lyrics for too.
In the run up to the upcoming JemCon, Anne Bryant has been digging through her personal archives and uncovered these handwritten sheets, showing some of the work in progeress on the theme, back when it was still for "M".
As best I can transcribe it (And with crossed out words/lines in brackets), it reads
M:
M if for myself,
my sister and my friends
and the music that moves me
Group:
"There's no one like her"
M:
M is for magic
for making things happen
For marvelous fashion
"M" is for melody
(Note: I have no idea what the letters in brackets at the start of the line are here)
(9) The want (try) to sabotage your her plans
(S) (But they can't - they don't have a chance)
They never could
Cause when you're good
They don't have a chance
(G) She's got loyal loving fans
(M) M is for the music that makes me/you dance
Msfits:
Our songs are better!
Our clothes are better!
Our shows are better!
Our nails are longer!
(Our amps) the beat (are) is stronger!
M+Group:
(They want to) They'll never sabotage (Your/Her) our plans
Misfits
We've got the stuff..
And the second page is much more like what we ended up with, after the name change
M!
M is excitement
M!
M is adventure
Glamor and Glitter,
Fashion and Fame
M is truly, truly outrageous
Truly, truly, truly outrageous
The music's contagious
Truly outrageous
M is my name
No one else is the same
M is my name!
