Jennifer Clavin of Bleached
Interview #1
Name: Jennifer Clavin Age: 28 Occupation: Musician (Bleached) Sign: Capricorn (Scorpio moon/Sagittarius rising)
What is beautiful to you in a woman? Jennifer: Mainly confidence. Powerful confident women. The Beyonce videos, how she portrays herself in those videos is so awesome and attractive.
Who inspires you? Jennifer: There’s a few different people but, originally I would say Debbie Harry (Blondie) because watching her perform gives me confidence because she seems so confident and doesn’t care. I mean she obviously cares but her presence and confidence is very natural. She owns what she’s doing. I’m also inspired by a lot of punk bands because they’re doing whatever they want to do and not giving a fuck about what other people think. But lately, I’ve been really inspired by women that sing really well. This is a new thing for me because I never really cared about singing because I was into punk, where you don’t care about singing. My older sister is obsessed with pop stars, and I kinda am too- but anyways recently we were watching all these Youtube videos of Rihanna, Adele, Beyonce and they really know how to sing. It’s so awesome how they have worked so hard to get themselves to where they are, where they can perform in front of thousands of people and still hit every note and be so powerful, it becomes really emotional watching those videos.
Have you ever been obsessed with morphing your body? How so? Jennifer: Um, it’s funny because the only thing I’ve ever felt is that sometimes I look too skinny. So in the past, I would be like, “Oh my god, I look so skinny.” I like being thicker, I like when my butt and my hips and my thighs are thicker. I like looking more curvy, I think it looks really healthy. I don’t like looking really skinny. I feel that when you look curvier you own yourself more.
How do you personally manage society’s expectations of how you should look/behave as a woman? Jennifer: That gets complicated and difficult. When you have a lot of people following you on Instagram or social media you get kind of worried because people put you on a pedestal and you have to maintain this image of being cool or beautiful and you start thinking, “If I post this picture will I look really ugly because it’s kind of a bad picture?” But then I’ll think, “Wait, actually people like real people.” They want to see that stuff. Every now and then I think that and thoughts like that will go through my head and then I remember this does not need to be the perfect picture every single time. You know. But it’s also crazy too because people are constantly posting pictures of themselves. I am actually so much more into video; I wish you could just constantly post videos. It’s more who we are when capturing a video of someone than just a photo. In photos you can make yourself look any way and it doesn’t say much about you other than what you look like at the time. Myth of Beauty: So to answer that question you would say that there is an awareness of perception others place on you, but that at the end of the day you discount it. Like it pops in your head but you try to stick to what is true to you? Jennifer: Exactly, sometimes I feel like when I become overly aware, I will feel so strong about caring about what others think, that then I will take it to the next level I will just say or do things to be crazy. I’m just posting this crazy picture or saying this crazy comment just to get a reaction. MOB: Maybe as a rebellion? Jennifer: Exactly. MOB: In regards to managing expectations others place on you, because you are really talented but also a really attractive woman, do you feel when people see you perform they are surprised? Jennifer: When I’m on stage I just don’t care at all. Anything I worry about on the internet or my image just goes out the door when I perform. I never think about the faces I’m making or if I look weird or anything. When I’m playing, I know this is where I am supposed to be, this is the best high of my life- every single time I play a show. In the end people are going to judge you so you just need to do what you want to do. If peolple are not going to like you, they are going to find a reason to justify it. It might come from some weird past they have, who knows.
How do you eat or exercise to feel and look your best? Jennifer: This one gets tricky. MOB: Because you’re on tour a lot. Jennifer: I seriously go from black to white on this. I feel my best when I am eating healthy. My roomate and I bought a Vitamix. I like using that. I found a yoga place nearby I like going to. But it’s really hard because then you’re on tour and you don’t even want to exercise because when you have that time to yourself you just want to spend it sleeping. And you start using junk food to comfort you on tour a lot of times. The last tour we went on, we tried to go to Whole Foods as much as possible. But it’s so much easier to do that when everyone is in it together. Because if there’s two people that don’t want to go, then that trip to Whole Foods is out of the way, and annoying and expensive for everyone. So if everyone is not on the same page then you’re just going to go somewhere that is not as healthy. MOB: Do you stress about that? Jennifer: I stress more about it when I’m home actually. Because I know I need to catch up on all the exercise I didn’t do and make up for all the bad food I ate. Like last night I had Doritos for dinner because I was so lazy. But I also think it’s okay to have those nights. If you totally cut that out then you go too extreme and too healthy and you get obsessed and you’re like, “Fuck being healthy I’m gonna eat whatever.”
Favorite easy go-to recipe or thing you make all the time? Jennifer: I’m obsessed with trying to perfect my marinara sauce. Sometimes I make it really great and sometimes it’s not great at all. Whole wheat pasta with marinara, I love that. MOB: Meat or no meat? Jennifer: I’ll either just do plain or usually I’ll pit Tofurky sausages. I eat meat but love Tofurky sausage. I was vegetarian/vegan for so long and I still have weirdness towards meat. I remember I bought these meat sausages and I was like, “I’m gonna eat real meat tonight.” But there was this like.. MOB: Gristle? Jennifer: Yes I HATE that! It disgusts me so much. It just reminds me I am eating a dead animal. Anyways, I just simmer a sauce of tomatoes, garlic, Tofurky sausage for a really long time and put some red wine and let it cook down. I put the sauce in the Vitamix after making the sauce and it gives it this great texture- which I would say is the final secret.
Ok favorite snack? Healthy and unhealthy- you can only pick one for each. Jennifer: My favorite not-healthy snack would be…I’m torn between Doritos “Cool Ranch” and Doritos “Nacho Cheese.” MOB: Fair enough, that can be your one unhealthy snack.” Jennifer: In Europe the “Cool Ranch” flavor is called, “Cool American.” Healthy snack, that’s so funny because I was just talking about that yesterday and I was like, “I wish I had a healthy snack that I really like.” But lately it’s been yogurt with cinnamon and blueberries.
Do you have a favorite beauty product or beauty ritual? Jennifer: I just started using all this stuff our bassist uses and she’s 33 and her skin started looking so good! I was like, “What are you doing!” So I bought a ton of stuff from this line from Whole Foods called MyChelle. It’s a a natural product line and there’s a great face mist and serum. I also use a Neutrogena face wash that uses willow bark for acne. Sometimes the organic products don’t work as well, and then I found this Neutrogena product that is not supposed to be harsh and little more natura.. I guess willow bark is a derivative of salicylic acid but as drying. Actually this one time I was at a bar and this lady came up to me, my skin was breaking out really bad at the time. I was taking birth control to prevent the acne and it was helping it but then the birth control was making me insane- so I had to stop taking it. Anyways, this lady comes up to me at a bar, and at the time I was using all these anti-acne products. She came up to me and said, “I am an esthetician and your skin is just so dry right now. It’s really craving moisture. If you’re using any salicylic acid products- which I think you are, you need to off of that completely. Come see me, I will give you a free facial and teach you about all the products you can use to change your skin.” I never ended up going but she was right. Anyways, there is another product that I am totally obsessed with, this Argan oil from Sephora. They make a light version of it and a full-on version. And I’ve only used it a few times and I can already see such a big difference in my skin’s moisture. I looked online at all the reviews and I was so scared to use oil because I have always been taught not to use oil products on acne-prone skin but this one does not cause breakouts. And I haven’t had any breakouts and it helps with oil control, all the reviews from hundreds of people were just ilke, “This is the best stuff ever!” And now I’m totally obsessed and I’m going to buy my mom a bottle for Christmas.
Do you practice any spiritual methods? Jennifer: Yes, I totally believe in the law of attraction. I’m naturally negative and I’ve been trying not to be and I am doing a pretty good job. I grew up with my parents not believing in that kind of stuff and I had a really good friend introduce me to that kind of spiritual thinking and it’s just crazy because it really does work and it’s crazy. It’s true that when you start thinking positively and putting that out there, you start feeling so much better. Also I have friends that do tarot cards, and I think that’s a weird law of attraction thing too because you’re almost…I guess the best way to explain is that you’re pulling the card that you need. It’s telling yourself what you’re thinking and what you need. Also have you ever tried using a pendulum? MOB: No, but I know what it is. Jennifer: Ok I don’t really use pendulums that often but it’s the exact same thing. It’s not predicting the future but it’s telling you what you already know but that maybe you’re mentally not able to admit. MOB: Like, there’s a distraction, or your ego. What you think you want versus what your ego wants. Finding that true voice underneath it all. Jennifer: That’s the thing when you first start using the pendulum, you can ask it really basic questions to test it. You know, “Is my name Jennifer?” Stuff like that. If it’s going to say yes, it goes clockwise and if it’s a no counterclockwise. I mean this is really extreme and I would never do this, but apparently you can take it to the grocery store and put it over food to see if it’s good. MOB: I believe in all this energy stuff to a fault. I know that’s extreme but it would be fun to live in a world where you could try stuff like this without people thinking you’re crazy. Jennifer: The whole ego thing, I have been getting so into that lately. I know that’s what helped me in not getting drawn back into my last relationship. If I notice myself getting upset, I mean, I used to spend so much time getting angry and working myself up over little things. I would get so boiled up and think thoughts like, “I can’t believe you, how can you do this to me?” It’s just not a good feeling to be there. I’m reading the Eckhart Tolle book again (Power of Now). MOB: The first time I read that my brain hurt so much. Jennifer: I know when I found it I couldn’t believe there was a gem like this. It is so inspiring. MOB: It’s so simple, it’s hard to grasp. Jennifer: It’s really simple, but so much information you never really pondered. And you realize it’s really easy to be happier if you make it a habit and you’re more positive and you let things happen and not let your ego get so involved. MOB: Or if bad things happen, instead of labeling it, it’s just something that happened. It is what it is. Jennifer: Everything happens for a reason, it helps you grow.
What is the best advice you’ve received regarding inner/outer beauty? Jennifer: Be confident. If you’re confident, people are attracted to that. You’re not doubting yourself, you’re not scared and people are drawn to that.
What would be some advice you would like to offer our readers who maybe are struggling with their image or self-confidence? Jennifer: I think just to be yourself is what feels best. To not let people get to you. If someone does try to put you down it’s more about them than you. Do and be whoever you want to be because people are still going to judge you. When you think that way, you just do what you want to do. You can’t make everyone happy, but you can make yourself happy. When you’re giving off the real you people can feel that and they feed off that energy.
Last question, do you have a guaranteed trick for snapping out of those, “I’m feeling ugly” days? Jennifer: First of all, it’s really crazy how those days come when you’re about to get your period (we both started laughing really hard at this point). When that hits me, I’m just like, “I’m PMSing, snap out of it, you just need to chill.” I put on sunglasses and put my hair up. Or I will put on a punk t-shirt. Or sometimes I’ll just eat ice cream in bed and watch my favorite shows on Netflix. MOB: Sounds like you have a good balance with everything.
