And with that, they parted like two strangers, setting off in entirely different directions, just as they had before, as if it were some kind of bad habit, or maybe just a curse.

But there's no such thing as a completely fresh start. Everything new arrives on the heels of something old, and every beginning comes at the cost of an ending.

He was walking because it was better than staying still, and because it seemed the best possible way to escape his thoughts, which crowded his head like the fog over the bay, thick as fleece and impossible to see around.

Maybe it was possible that you could take someone out of their life and drop them in the middle of another place entirely and they could seem like someone completely different.
But even if that were the case, she thought, it wasn't really that they had changed-it was just the backdrop, the circumstances, the cast of characters. Just because you painted a house didn't mean the furniture inside was any different.
It had to be the same with people. Deep down, at the very core, they'd still be the same no matter where they were, wouldn't they?

It wasn't just that you got to be somewhere else entirely. It was that you got to be someone else entirely, too.

Do you ever have a book surprise you? I didn’t have any high expectations for The Unsinkable Greta James but this book is going to be in my Top Ten this year. “It’s been a few months since Greta lost it on stage during one of her concerts. She was performing a new song she had written for her mom. But it was too soon after her mom’s sudden death and Greta couldn’t do it. Now she’s in performance limbo. Her brother calls and tells her she needs to go on the Alaskan cruise with their father - the father who’s dismissive of her career choice - who’s never believed in her. The cruise their mother planned before she died to celebrate a big anniversary. Greta doesn’t want to but goes anyway…and finds some things.” This book is about grief and family and love and reconciliation. It’s one of those books that leaves you with a warm feeling at the end. Greta is one of my new favorite characters. (I think they could have included some of her music 🎶 🎸 on the audiobook.) Fathers and daughters will get the dynamic between Conrad and Greta. Conrad’s deep need for security after growing up poor and Greta’s want to chase her dream - it’s always a conflict and takes a lot of communicating to get through. Smith makes you think you know where the story is going but she doesn’t wrap it up with a neat bow. It’s messy - just like life. Read this book this year or listen to the wonderful audiobook performance from Mae Whitman. #theunsinkablegretajames #jennifersmith #bookofthemonth #indiemusician #indiemusic #contemporaryfiction #musicfiction #daddiesanddaughters #bookstagram #bookshelves #booknerd #readinglife #bookphotography #bookcommunity #bookblogger #sodacityreads #suspensebook #bookhaul #homelibrary #alaskacruise #characterdrivenbooks #bookrecs #audiobooks (at Alaska) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck0nz3oL-_2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
