There’s really no better way to wrap up your junior year of college then to head East and take in some Sunday Night Baseball. While our caravan arrived a bit late in the first inning, we were about to witness what appeared to be another pitching gem between Jered Weaver and Justin Verlander.
Weaver and Verlander were each taken in the first round of the 2004 draft which produced a total of 5 no-hitters (Homer Bailey-2, Verlander-2, Weaver-1). The Rangers opted to go with hard throwing future convict, Matt Bush, No.1 overall, while the Tigers selected Verlander. Weaver went 12th just after Neil Walker, who the Pirates drafted as a catcher.
As for the game, the pitching duel was looking to be a sure thing until Verlander’s future teammate, Torii Hunter, tripled home Casey Kotchman to break into the scoring column. The Angels added another in the fifth and four more in the sixth, with Hunter and Erick Aybar doing all the damage.
Detroit finally chased Weaver in the seventh and Edgar Renteria and Ivan Rodriguez each drove home a run off reliever Justin Speier, who was being heckled along with Jose Arredondo in the Angels bullpen by a bunch of drunk Tigers fans, including someone in a Tigger costume.
That was all the scoring as the bullpens shut things down from there. The LAAOA would take home the 6-2 win
