Steven R McQueen : Vampire Diaries (S04E03)
in honor of pride month jeremy and bonnie are both bisexual btw
Um, hi, I mean, hello
I've been following people who write for The Vampire Diaries, and then you showed up, which is great.
Um, I just wanted to know if you if you could pick five characters and explain them to me like a run-down.
If this is too tedious, I can make it fun by asking you to pick your favorite with a rundown about them and a song that describes them.
Im trying to learn more about the show, and you are a pretty active person I saw.
I also like your profile happy pride
That is so incredibly sweet of you to say, thank you! And Happy Pride to you, too! 🏳️🌈
I wasn't totally sure if you meant the TVDU in general or just The Vampire Diaries specifically, since the fandom really blends TVD and The Originals together. So, I decided to give you the best of both worlds! I’m going to split this up: five essential TVD characters and five essential Originals characters. Then, I’m going to add some bonus mini-rundowns of my personal favorites under the cut if you feel like reading a little more.
Just a quick heads-up before we dive in: hopefully you are totally okay with spoilers, because there are definitely going to be major spoilers in this rundown. Proceed with caution!
TVD Core Characters
Elena Gilbert
Listen, Elena gets so much unwarranted hate in the fandom, but if you actually look at what this girl goes through, you would be crying constantly too. She starts as a regular human girl just trying to survive the trauma of her parents driving off Wickery Bridge. Then she finds out she is a Petrova Doppelgänger, which basically means her blood is a magical skeleton key for every ancient curse ever created. Major plot points include her being sacrificed by Klaus in season two to break his hybrid curse (she survives because her biological dad sacrificed himself instead), her turning into a vampire in season four after drowning on the exact same bridge her parents died on, turning off her humanity switch after her brother dies, and eventually getting put into a magical coma by Kai Parker so she can’t wake up until Bonnie dies.
Romantically, she is the center of the most iconic love triangle of the 2010s. She starts with Stefan Salvatore, which is this incredibly pure, grounding, soulmate-level love that literally saves her life. But as the trauma piles up and she becomes a vampire, her brain chemistry is completely altered by Damon Salvatore. Her romance with Damon is messy, consuming, deeply toxic at times, but undeniably epic. The slow burn of her falling for Damon while trying to stay loyal to Stefan is the driving force of the first four seasons. Ultimately, her endgame is Damon; they both take the cure for vampirism and live out a human life together.
Stefan Salvatore
The ultimate tragic, brooding hero who will literally decapitate an entire village and then write a guilty poem about it in his diary. Stefan was turned in 1864 by Katherine Pierce, and his biggest curse is that he is a "Ripper." When he drinks human blood, he completely blacks out, loses his mind, and tears people apart. To overcompensate, he lives on a strict animal blood diet and has a massive martyr complex. His major plot points include going full Ripper with Klaus in the 1920s and again in season three to save Damon's life, drowning in a safe at the bottom of a quarry for an entire summer while his evil doppelgänger Silas steals his life, and eventually giving up his own life in the series finale to ensure his brother gets a happy ending.
His love life is pure trauma. He was abused and manipulated by Katherine Pierce for over a century. Elena was his ultimate salvation, but losing her to his brother absolutely shattered him. After seasons of healing, he finds the most beautiful, organic, slow-burn romance with Caroline Forbes. They go from friends to best friends to absolutely completely in love.
Damon Salvatore
King of doing the wrong things for the right reasons. The toxic fave. Damon walks into season one as an absolute menace, snapping necks and terrorizing teenagers just to make Stefan miserable because of a grudge from 1864. His character arc is a masterclass in slow redemption fueled by spite, eyeliner, and sheer stubbornness. Major plot points include his revelation that he was an Augustine vampire tortured in a cell for decades, getting trapped in a 1994 Prison World with Bonnie Bennett (which genuinely saves his soul and gives him a real best friend), and ultimately choosing to become human.
Damon’s romantic history starts with a century-long pathetic obsession with Katherine Pierce, who didn't even care about him. But Elena Gilbert completely rewires his universe. He loves her so violently and so selfishly that he constantly makes the terrible, morally gray choices to keep her alive, even if it means she hates him for it. Delena is the definition of "I would burn the world down for you," and despite the sire bond drama in season four and all their breakups, they are the endgame of the show.
Caroline Forbes
I will scream this until I lose my voice: Caroline Forbes has the one of the best character development in television history. She starts as a deeply insecure, neurotic, try-hard mean girl who gets used as a literal blood bag by Damon in season one. But when Katherine Pierce murders her with vampire blood in her system in season two, becoming a vampire actually fixes her. She becomes fiercely confident, hyper-organized, and the absolute unshakeable moral compass of the entire group. Major plot points include her horrific torture by her own father, turning off her humanity after her mother dies of cancer (giving us No-Humanity Caroline, which was iconic), and magically carrying Alaric Saltzman's witch twins in season seven.
Romantically, she has the best chemistry with literally everyone. She has a groundbreaking, deeply emotional romance with Tyler Lockwood where she helps him through his agonizing werewolf transitions. But then Klaus Mikaelson rolls into town and becomes absolutely feral for her. The They have this intense, undeniable pull, but Caroline refuses to compromise her morals for him. Ultimately, her deepest and most mature love is Stefan Salvatore, whom she marries, later opening the Salvatore Boarding School in his honor.
Bonnie Bennett
THE ABSOLUTE BACKBONE OF THIS FRANCHISE. Bonnie is an immensely powerful Bennett witch, and the writers treated her terribly, but she carried Mystic Falls on her back for eight seasons. She is constantly sacrificing her happiness, her magic, and her actual life to clean up the vampires' messes. Major plot points include opening the tomb, dying to resurrect Jeremy Gilbert, becoming the literal Anchor to the Other Side (meaning every dead supernatural being had to pass through her body in agonizing pain), getting stuck in the Prison World, and eventually creating an entire psychic dimension out of pure grief.
Bonnie’s love life was sidelined way too often. She had a long, sweet, but very messy romance with Jeremy Gilbert that gets ruined when he starts cheating on her with ghost vampires. But then we get to Enzo St. John. Her romance with Enzo is everything she ever deserved. Enzo treats her like she hung the moon and the stars. They have this epic, protective, cottage-core romance hidden away from the world, and it is the most pure love on the show until Stefan violently rips Enzo's heart out right in front of her. Bonnie deserved better, but her power and resilience are unmatched.
The Originals Core Characters
Klaus Mikaelson
The ultimate menace with severe daddy issues. Klaus is the Original Hybrid (half original vampire, half werewolf), and he is deeply traumatized, highly paranoid, and prone to painting masterpieces with the blood of his enemies. He spent a thousand years running from his abusive father, Mikael, and constantly daggering his own siblings whenever they annoyed him. Major plot points include breaking his hybrid curse in TVD, moving back to New Orleans to reclaim the city he built, having a miracle tribrid baby (Hope) from a one-night stand, and his entire redemption arc which centers solely around wanting to be worthy of his daughter.
Romantically, Klaus is a disaster in the best way. He is completely enamored with Caroline Forbes in Mystic Falls, But in New Orleans, his dynamic shifts to Camille O'Connell. Cami is a human bartender with a psych degree who sits this thousand-year-old mass murderer down and essentially forces him into intensive therapy. Their love is profound, intellectual, and deeply intimate. Klaus's story ends with him sacrificing his own life, absorbing a dark ancient magic called the Hollow to save Hope, and dying alongside his brother.
Elijah Mikaelson
He is the "Noble Brother," but his nobility is mostly a coping mechanism to deal with the fact that he is just as monstrous as Klaus. His entire millennial existence is dedicated to saving Klaus's soul, often at the absolute detriment of everyone else around him. Major plot points include his traumatic "Red Door" mental block where he hides his worst atrocities, having his memories wiped to protect his family, and running a vampire secret society called the Strix.
Elijah's love life is a tragedy. He loved Katherine Pierce, but his true, agonizing slow-burn romance is with Hayley Marshall. The Haylijahdynamic is completely intoxicating they are drawn to each other instantly, but family duty, politics, and Klaus's ego constantly keep them apart. When Elijah has his memories wiped, he inadvertently lets Hayley die, and when his memories return, the grief completely shatters him, leading directly to his decision to die with Klaus in the series finale.
Rebekah Mikaelson
Just let this girl go to prom and be happy! Rebekah is the only female Original sibling, and she is fierce, petty, fiercely loyal, and just wants to be a normal human girl. Her brothers, especially Klaus, have completely ruined her life for a thousand years, daggering her and putting her in a box for decades every time she tries to fall in love. Major plot points include her 1920s Chicago era with Stefan, taking baby Hope on the run to protect her from witches, and taking the cure so she can finally be mortal.
Her love life is basically just her trusting the wrong men and paying the price, until Marcel Gerard. Marcel is her endgame. He is the vampire king of New Orleans (whom Klaus raised), making their romance the ultimate taboo that causes actual centuries of violent family wars. But Marcel and Rebekah’s love endures literally everything, and they end up together, with Marcel promising to be with her even as she ages and dies as a human.
Hayley Marshall
The ultimate glow-up. Hayley walks into TVD as a shady, manipulative lone wolf who gets twelve hybrids slaughtered just to find out about her real parents. But a one-night stand with Klaus makes her pregnant with Hope, and she moves to New Orleans and becomes absolute royalty. She breaks her pack's curse, becomes a wildly powerful hybrid, and is the fiercest mama bear on television. Major plot points include giving birth while her throat gets slit by witches, transitioning into a hybrid to save her baby, and leading the Crescent Wolf Coven.
Romantically, she is torn. She has that intense, soul-deep pull with Elijah, but she makes the ultimate sacrifice play and marries Jackson Kenner, the werewolf alpha, in a mystic unification ritual to save her people. Jackson is pure, good, and devoted, and Hayley genuinely falls in love with his heart. When Jackson is murdered, it wrecks her. She ultimately dies a hero's death, burning in the sun to kill a vampire supremacist and save her teenage daughter.
Camille O'Connell
The bravest human in the entire franchise. Cami gets dragged into the Mikaelson chaos because her twin brother went crazy and killed himself in a church due to a witch hex. Klaus tries to use her as a mind-compelled diary, but Cami's brain is too sharp, and she fights through the compulsion. She becomes the moral sounding board for the most dangerous family on earth. Major plot points include managing a massive inventory of dark magical objects, getting turned into a vampire against her will by Klaus's crazy ex-girlfriend Aurora, and getting bitten by a scientifically engineered super-werewolf bite.
Her romance with Klaus is the definition of seeing the monster and loving the man underneath. She holds him accountable, she doesn't let him get away with his tantrums, and she is one of the only people Klaus truly, deeply respects. Her death in season three is absolutely agonizing she dies in Klaus's arms as he gives her a perfect day in her mind, completely altering the trajectory of his life forever.

Legacies Is About to Throw a Totally Bitchin' Decade Dance
The Vampire Diaries was famous for its decade dances over the years, and now Legacies is keeping the tradition alive with a bitchin' new theme. The CW's synopsis for Episode 5 of Legacies' second season teases an '80s-themed decade dance, and OMG, sweet dreams are made of this.
"As the Salvatore School prepares for its upcoming '80s-themed decade dance, Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) and Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) find themselves trapped inside a never-ending labyrinth with a monster on their trail," the synopsis reads. "Meanwhile, Josie (Kaylee Bryant) and Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) decide whether or not to take their relationship to the next level. Elsewhere, MG (Quincy Fouse) turns to Kaleb (Chris Lee) for advice on what to do about Sebastian (Thomas Doherty), while Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith) struggles to adjust to his life back at the school."
Fans of The Vampire Diaries know that school dances (especially decade dances) were never just fun and games and they almost always resulted in bloodshed and magical mayhem. It sounds like this shindig will probably be more of the same, but at least the outfits will probably be bad to the bone?
The last time Mystic Falls High tried to throw an '80s themed decade dance — planned by Rebekah Mikaelson (Claire Holt), herself — it ended up being canceled by the mayor. Something about too many people mysteriously dying? Here's hoping this generation is able to enjoy the crimped hair, shoulder pads, and red balloons more than the last!
More specifically, we really hope Alaric (Matthew Davis) gets to take a break from monster hunting to enjoy this dance, seeing as he never had a great track record with them on The Vampire Diaries. The first decade dance he attended nearly ended with him outing himself as a vampire hunter to Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder), the next he spent possessed by Hope's dad, Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan), and then Esther Mikaelson ended up killing him and turning him into an unkillable Original vampire hunter during his final decade dance. On second thought, maybe the poor guy should just stay home?
Legacies airs Thursdays at 9/8c on The CW.
