Hi Michael, It was a pleasure to meet you and your father Thursday at Sothebys. What a collection! Tom and I were amazed at the extensiveness and the detail involved in the trains. How wonderful that you are providing this experience for so many to share. We sincerely hope that the collection stays in New York and look forward to hearing the results of the sale. I took the opportunity to visit this awesome display on Wednesday (Feb 23), and fortunately for me, Michael Greene and his sister were there while I was looking around. He just happened to open one of the cases to pass around a lead soldier to some of the youngsters who were there. This led to some interesting conversations about the collection, and the sale. He mentioned that the tough part about selling the collection is not in finding someone with the funds, but the space to store it, much less display it. Feb 28 is when the collection must vacate Sotheby’s to make room for whatever comes next. Of all the items displayed, I must say that the Bing gauge 5 train was the most impressive to me. It is just on the border of being toy or actual transportation. But it all was impressive. The condition of each item exhibited was extraordinary, also. If these toys were actually played with, it is tough to tell. I am glad that I went, and blown away that those in attendance had the time to chat with me. -Tim O’malley
NEW YORK, NY.- Throughout January and February, Sotheby’s will exhibit selections from the Jerni Collection, the largest and most comprehensive collection of magnificent quality European and American toys and trains ever assembled. The exhibition takes up an entire floor of Sotheby’s York Avenue headquarters, yet remarkably, what is on view represents a mere 20% of the tens of thousands of objects included in the collection. The entire collection is available for private sale through Sotheby’s as a single lot.
It is the result of Jerry Greenes passion for vintage toys and trains. He has built up an invaluable collection of almost 35,000 pieces over 50 years and says its time now to part with it. He wants to share it with the world and is looking for buyer who would acquire the entire collection. Jerrys unique collection is known as the Jerni Collection and is considered the largest and most comprehensive toy collection in the world. Sotheby’s is handling the sale, though it will not be auctioned.
Jerry Greene kept this astonishing collection in five basement rooms of his suburban Philadelphia home, and now Sotheby’s auction house in New York has its entire floor filled by only 5000 pieces...
