Night Slaves by Jerry Sohl $4 Fawcett Gold Medal Books (1965) Jerry Sohl was a writer for Twilight Zone back in the day and this novel has the feel of long Twilight Zone episode. This is one of those novels that isn’t exactly Science Fiction but not exactly mainstream either. Psychiatrist Matt Cassel takes on a strange case involving a patient, Clay Howard, who claims to have experienced alien contact with a woman he calls Naillil. Clay’s wife, Marjorie, fears for Clay’s sanity and life. Dr. Cassel is falling in love with Marjorie. Meanwhile Clay is planning a desperate escape from this world to be with the unearthly Naillil. It all sounds crazy, and it should be, yet Jerry Sohl keeps the pace tight while leaving you wondering if Clay is the victim of psychosis, or really is telling the truth about the Naillil. Jerry Sohl believed Costigan’s Needle to be his best science-fiction work: Dr. Costigan invents a device which appears to produce an opening into a different world. Since his first model is not large enough to actually explore this different world he secures the backing of a large mid-western electronics company to build one large enough for a human to go through. The Time Dissolver by Jerry Sohl $7 Avon Books First Edition (1957) This book is a low-key, subtle, short novel about a man and woman who wake up in a motel together one day in 1957 with no memory of each other, or of anything that has happened since 1946; and they have to explain 1950s America to themselves, and themselves to each other, before discovering what has actually happened to them. The atmospherics are fantastic. Jerry Sohl was more successful as a TV scriptwriter for Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Twilight Zone and even Star Trek, so look out for his stuff when you can.
