Avond, an album by Gentry Bronson & Jesse Brewster on Spotify

For the first time, my English version of Avond with Jesse Brewster has been released to Spotify!

Avond was originally written by Boudewijn de Groot & Lennaert Nijgh in Dutch, and has a rich history for being one of the biggest songs ever in The Netherlands.

I think of Boudewijn and Lennaert as the Elton John & Bernie Taupin songwriting team of Holland. And Boudewijn is a bit like Bob Dylan for The Netherlands & Belgium.

I didn't know anything about Avond's history or anything about the songwriters when I picked the song as one of the first Dutch songs I would translate and adapt. Then, it was just a song I would do during a Christmas & Holiday tour of Holland in 2007 & 2008.

My good buddy and European manager Sacco Koster had recommended the song along with a few by Tröckener Kecks and a few other Dutch singing artists. Even though I don't speak Dutch and had no idea what it meant, the chorus resonated with me.

Sacco helped me adapt the song into English and I did my best to follow Boudewijn's music When a packed house at the De Waag music venue in Haarlem that December 2007 sang along evangelically to my English version, I learned about the power of this song.

I spent several weeks recording this version with Jesse who added some fantastic back-up vocals and Spanish-style guitar. It had never been recorded in English before. Sadly, Lennaert passed before he could hear his song first done in English. We released it in October 2008 with a video by Courtney Angermeier.

Afterward, I got become friends with Boudewijn and hung out with him during a few of my tours and one of his. A true gentleman and talent that goes beyond words.

I've sung Avond many nights on tour in Europe, but not that often in America or Mexico. So, I hope people around the world get a chance to hear this ballad with a simple message of love & faith, in all of us, or in just one other person.

Jesse Brewster follows in that long line of singer-songwriter West Coast vibe from James Taylor, Jackson Browne, David Crosby, Neil Young and the list goes on. Songs about life that we can all relate to. Excellent vocals go well with the cool guitar , sometimes fiddle, nice southern feel to it all. In addition to the ‘sounds like section above’, my influences are from a wide spectrum ranging from southern rock, to hip hop to soul, bluegrass and folk to pop. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Bob Marley, Ray LaMontagne, Amos Lee, Patty Griffin, Muse, I listen to different stuff all the time

We knew we were going to be a Band…

I was in bands for years before I began writing a lot of original material and ultimately went solo as a frontman

1967 on the West Coast would’ve been amazing. Revolutionary new sounds were emerging, songs had a clear message, and going to see live music was what everyone in the younger generation was doing

Ever since it came out, Raising Sand by Robert Plant and Allison Kraus has been a favorite. Also been listening to Amos Lee, Nickel Creek, Ray LaMontagne, Beck, and Dawes recently.

If you could open for any Band right now who would that be and why?

First name that comes to mind is Paul McCartney, as I know it would be huge amount of exposure to a vast number of demographics, and I could watch the mastery of a 3 hour live show from behind the scenes from the best there is a the craft of songwriting and live performance.

When you are touring and have some time off , where could we find you..,.,

You mean when I’m not touring?

Hanging out with my family, playing guitar at home/writing, playing pickup gigs as a guitarist for fun, traveling

The one thing we want you to remember while your listening to us

Here’s a guy who not only is an accomplished musician/guitarist/producer, but has a honesty in his writing that’s not commonly found in todays music. Couple that with catchy melodies and danceable rhythms and the songs are undeniable. His sound can thread through many genres yet his lyrics and voice tie everything together.

San Francisco songwriter Jesse Brewster’s new project March of Tracks, 12 Months. 12 Singles. One Album - March of Tracks is a little different than most of the albums you may get. Jesse Brewster is writing, recording and releasing a single ever month for one year, covering a wide range of generes wrapping up with a full release in early 2014 follow along on soundcloud. Jesse Brewster’s sound fuses a Rock/Americana style he describes as “Tom Petty and Lynyrd Skynyrd get into a bar room brawl with Neil Young and John Mayer.” Jesse Brewster’s parents brewed his love for music at an early age. There was always something on the record player, be it Willie Nelson, The Stones or Bob Marley. At the age of 12 he started his first band with his brother Jim on drums and childhood friend Uriah Duffy (Whitesnake, Lyrics Born) on bass. “I can’t remember a time in my life when music wasn’t important to me,” he says. “It’s the greatest medium allowing you to express anger and rebellion, playful sarcasm, tenderness and beauty- it’s everything.” Brewster spent years touring with various bands as a guitarist and backup vocalist until a few years ago when he decided the time was right to break out on his own. “The singer-songwriter world is relatively new for me,” he admits. “While I’ve always loved singing, I was focused on the guitar.” Focused, that is, until he could no longer hold back the urge to create his own music. His creative spark was lit by a major catalyst: charity. He created his debut album, Confessional, as a benefit record to raise funds and create awareness of Polycystic Kidney Disease. One track in particular, “One Reason,” was written in memory of Brewster’s brother Jim who passed away in 1998 from PKD. “I have worked extensively with the PKD Foundation” he says, “since the release of the album, I help organize events and perform in support of the finding treatment and a cure for PKD.
