I cannot believe this needs to be said but fanfic writers don’t owe you anything. New stories, new chapters, we do not owe you a single thing. And to feel so entitled to demand that is wildly gross.
this is not the 95 theses, that’s just a coincidence.
Look, yo. I have a lot of problems with the Church and I struggle with my Faith and I get that catholics are not, you know, amazing. Lots of people have been hurt and for that i am deeply apologetic and ashamed. I hope you find peace. I really truly do.
But my experience with the church has been mostly positive. I was raised in a hella liberal church and ended up at a college with a very liberal community of faith. I was confirmed by a priest who had been a Freedom Rider, which he mentioned to me exactly one time in passing. It wasn’t even a humble brag, it was a “these are my values and this is how i live them” in such a low key way. Many of you know I went to an all women’s college. The order of nuns that founded us literally got in trouble with Benedict 16 because they don’t protest abortion clinics. They protest torture, the prison complex. They open homes for victims of domestic abuse and educate women at every level. They are hella concerned with “the dear neighbor”. I look up to them in how they live their faith every day. Their response to Benedict was basically the human equivalent of the shrug emoji. In a lot of ways, they are the christians I want to be. Just fucking showing up for justice.
After I graduated with my BA, I kind of fell out of the habit of going to mass all the time because I lived far away from the campus chapel. I still would pop in tho, esp. in grad school around finals or whatever because I feel good in that space. And after the shitty election and results, I felt really called to go back to mass more regularly.
I finally moved back to this neighborhood.
I have only been to mass once. Because, drumroll please, new priest.
Ohhhhhhhh god. I do not like him. He’s youngish, in his early 30s if I were to guess. I just read an article about him on the website. He describes himself as a “baby priest” (why are men like this? you are an Adult). and my first mass, and last for awhile sadly, he decided to lecture a community of primarily women about abortion.
NOW. there are a lot of things i disagree with about the Church. But my chapel has always felt safe to me, at least until this point. Because I had never heard the word Abortion in there before. There (were? hopefully are?) queer people in the choir, pals of mine. It’s a small community, people are pretty open about being out. But this new young buck has decided he’s Traditional. I was so outraged about it that I tracked down his email and told him abortion is a Mercy.
Because it fucking is.
/RAGE RAGE
You know what pisses me off? He probably ignored my email because he has these fucking degrees in theology. But you know what? IT’S MY CHURCH TOO. IT’S MY FAITH TOO. I live it, or try to, every day. This asshole of a baby priest hasn’t lived his faith like my previous one. Not that I’ve seen. Not like the sisters that are a living part of the faith community at that college. All I know about him is he defended a theology doctorate. That’s nothing in the real world.
So you can’t kick me out, asshole, even if I do believe in abortion and equality across all genders and orientation.
