Brief introduction
Novel and anime differ greatly on who Gamō Jirō is.
In the novel (and therefore in D no Maō) Gamō Jirō is the identity taken by one of the first batch of Yūki’s students, who’s instructed to replicate (perfectly imitate) Gamō Jirō’s appearance, to the extent of their experiences, interpersonal relationships, actions, mantras, hobbies, preferences in food and all sorts of information.
Therefore in the novel (and in D no Maō) we’ve two Gamō Jirō.
The real Gamō Jirō was an employee at tailor Terashima by several years, lived in the shop and frequently comes and goes from the estate of the British Consul and that, due to a spy having to take his identity, is first taken under heavy protection of the military police and then enlisted by the army after a while, and sent to mainland China so that as long as Graham was Japan, even if were to be wounded in battle, he would not be allowed to return to the country so as to make sure Graham would never run into him by accident.
The fake Gamō Jirō is actually a D Agency spy replicating him with the purpose to investigate if Ernest Graham is involved in the bomb terror plot about the assassination of prominent government figures during the commemorative ceremony of Kōki 2600. In order to do so when he delivers a suit to Graham he manages to catch the chance to become his partner at chess playing. Later the spy will also introduce at night in Graham’s house using Chou Taimei as accomplice, discovering his journals about his time in India in which he exposed his meddling with illicit business, disgraceful rumours, covering those rumours by investing a large amount of silver in bribery, unspeakable desires, debaucherous relationships, scathing words towards the noble classes and also the method used to deliver instructions to the terrorists, a method that proved Graham’s innocence in the plan and that helped the spy to point out all that instead were involved.
Once all this was discovered the spy was meant to drop the identity of Gamō Jirō so he could be assigned elsewhere, however it turns out Graham will be transferred in England to take a prominent position so the spy hoped he can use against Graham the info he had read on his journal so as to force him to do Japan’s bidding.
In the anime though Gamō Jirō is someone with outstanding achievements either from the Army or from the Military Police who was selected to join Wind Agency. It’s unsure if Gamō Jirō is his true name or just an identity he took when he was sent to investigate on Ernest Graham’s involvement in getting “Grand Strategy” from Shirahata Kiichirō. He too becomes Graham’s chess partner and, after introducing himself in Graham’s house at night using Chou Taimei as accomplice, he managed to discover the method Graham was using to exchange messages. He then kills Chou and reports to Wind Agency’s founder, Lieutenant Colonel Kazato Akimasa. Later he’ll help Kazato into forcing Morishima Kunio (Jitsui’s fake identity) into cooperating with them and will be tasked to kill Morishima after he outlived his usefulness. Morishima though will manage to defend himself and cause him to faint. It’s unknown what happened of him afterward.
Personality
The real Gamō Jirō in the novel (and in D no Maō) was probably humble yet smart and friendly. It’s unsure if he also knew how to play chess or this detail was added to his persona so as to allow the spy impersonating him to connect with Graham.
The spy pretending to be Gamō Jirō in the novel (and in D no Maō) is confident, clever, very good at chess, at manipulating people, at ‘reading’ them, at opening saves. He harbours no hate toward Graham, even though he’s an Englishman.
The one using the name of Gamō Jirō in the anime is also confident, very good at chess and ‘reading’ people. He also doesn’t hesitate at all when he has to kill someone.
Physical appearance
In D no Maō, he’s a handsome boy with blond hair and dark eyes who, when in D Agency wears a suit while when playing the role of Gamō Jirō, dresses more casual, usually not wearing his jacket or carrying on his shoulder and pulling up his sleeves.
When he pretends to be Chinese he wears Chinese clothes.
In the Anime Gamō Jirō looks as a handsome man with brown hair and brown eyes.
While in Wind Agency, and later when they’re at the inn he wears a grey suit.
When playing the role of an employ on Taylor Terashima he wears a blue suits.
He also wore ‘thief clothes’ if so they can be called.
And we saw glimpses of him wearing glasses or casual clothes while spying on Graham.
Relationships
Kazato Akimasa
In the anime Kazato Akimasa is Gamō Jirō’s mentor and the one who acknowledged him as part of Wind Agency. He seems to be trusted enough by him that the man would use him as his right hand man when he recruited Morishita and then he also tasked him with getting rid of Morishita.
In the novel though they never met.
Yūki
In the novel Yūki trained the spy playing the role of Gamō Jirō and gave him the task to investigate about Graham. The spy playing the role of Gamō Jirō also reported directly to Yūki who gave him a hint on how to solve the case.
In the anime they never met, though Gamō Jirō is aware that, in order to survive, Wind Agency as to beat D Agency which was founded by Yūki.
Jitsui/Morishima Kunio
In the novel they never met.
In the anime Gamō Jirō was there when Morishima Kunio was recruited, possibly he was the one who pointed his name to Kazato Akimasa and, later, he was tasked with killing Morishima Kunio, who had supposedly been drugged by Kazato Akimasa. The plan backfired though as Morishima Kunio, in truth Jitsui in disguise, only pretended to be drugged and easily got rid of Gamō Jirō by causing him to faint. Gamō Jirō didn’t though much of Morishima Kunio before he knew of his true identity. Jitsui also think Gamō Jirō doesn’t amount to much as he was hoping, with his disguise, to catch a bigger fish.
Ernest Graham
In all the versions Ernest Graham is the target of the spy calling himself Gamō Jirō.
In the novel though Gamō Jirō is persuaded Graham is innocent and managed to prove so. He harbours no ill will toward Graham but later he will not hesitate in thinking he can blackmail him into cooperating with Japan due to the knowledge he gained over him. Graham genuinely likes him and loves to play chess with him.
In the anime Gamō Jirō is persuaded Graham is guilty and manages to prove it. Though Graham loves to play chess with him and seems to like him, truth to be told he doesn’t trust him.
Jane Graham
Gamō Jirō’s interaction with Jane Graham is extremely small.
He’s not really interested in her beyond his investigation as for her she ends up on telling him her thoughts about how wrong Japan is acting.
Chou Taimei
Chou Taimei’s Gamō Jirō’s unwilling accomplice into getting inside Ernest Graham’s house by night.
In the novel Chou had no idea he was helping the spy calling himself Gamō Jirō, as the guy disguised himself as a Chinese. Chou Taimei is a patriotic Chinese with a strong hate for Japanese people due to the war going on between Japan and China so he likely doesn’t like Gamō Jirō however, when the man disguises himself as a Chinese, Chou trusts him enough to follow him to a casino. He was also grateful when the guy lent him money albeit he was a little unwilling to help him steal from Graham. In the end though he agreed to drug the guards at Graham’s villa.
In the anime Chou was tasked by Graham with following Gamō Jirō. Prior to this though he apparently introduced Gamō Jirō to a casino… and the man ended up lending him money so Chou is deep indebted with him. As Gamō Jirō threatens to let the casino owners beat him due to his debt, Chou agrees to drug the guards and hand Gamō Jirō the key to the safe. He also helps him to escape when Graham was about to discover him. However later Gamō Jirō will kill Chou.
Wind Agency other members
They studied together and seem to be in good terms however their interaction is so small it’s hard to say more about it.
Abilities
He’s a chess master very good at figuring out the character of his opponent through chess.
In the novel he’s also very good at opening safes, at disguising himself and at manipulating people.
In the anime he’s more prone to coerce people and he doesn’t hesitate at killing them.
Trivia
Due to the drastic differences between the Gamō Jirō of the novel, who’s a D Agency member and the Gamō Jirō of the anime, who’s a Wind Agency member many think Gamō Jirō was previously a D Agency member who switched to Wind Agency. That’s not the case.
Gamō Jirō is represented as a smoker and as a rather happy guy in his chibi pictures. They also hint he loved books.
It’s possible his look wasn’t planned by Miwa Shirō as there is no sketch of him done by Miwa Shirō in the settei artbook.
The anime doesn’t tell us which ranking Gamō Jirō is or if Gamō Jirō is his true name. However since Wind Agency gathered people with outstanding achievements from the Army and the Military Police who’re probably also Army College members it’s likely that he’s a Captain or higher.
