From the top: Apatosaurus, Allosaurus and Fossil, Ostrich, and Satellite, Are You There?
Sculptures by Jim Gary (1939-2006). Most famous for his Twentieth Century Dinosaurs, which have traveled the world, he did many other works in the same medium-- used car parts. The Ostrich is a fun piece and Satellite, Are You There? shows why he is sometimes considered an abstract artist. These particular sculptures are featured at the Tallahassee Museum of History and Natural Science. While walking around and admiring the dinosaurs, we sometimes do not even realize what incredible work went into making all of these sculptures. For the dinosaurs, Gary visited museums with their skeletons on display in order to make them more accurately. The dinosaurs were great subjects not only for their coolness factor but for the underlying message. Gary conveys his concern for the environment through recycling old gas-guzzlers. He wanted to comment on wasteful we humans can be. The sculpture of Fossil, which looks like the carcass that Allosaurus is feasting on, appropriately ties the cars to the use of fossil-fuels and the themes of pollution and extinction.
