First and foremost: he’s sexist and absolutely creepy.
His ‘jokes’ are tasteless and horrible. He sexualized his minor characters. Remember all the weird sticking out butt pose Crona had? Or all the flipping skirt scene thing?
I can’t believe he made us see Maka’s panties, she’s fcking twelve. Even Soul had the decency to feel guilty.
He made almost no Functionally Responsible Parent except for like... Mifune (and then he killed him just for a plot device). His writing is questionable and shaky at best.
Also he has no respect for his female characters, and even some of his male ones. I’m going to excuse Blair because she’s mainly depicted as a consenting adult. But other female characters had suffered horrible sexist things. I still haven’t forgotten the manga’s Excalibur episode where they told the girls the only way to stop Hiro’s sexual harassment is to be stronger than him, which implied that the sexual harassment itself could be excused if the person responsible is strong enough. Disgusting.
I know ecchi things are common in general shounen demographic, but that doesn’t mean it should be there. Especially when the characters he had drawn were basically babies.
He comes up with wonderful concepts and characters but he had failed many times in delivering them.
so in short, I respect Ohkubo as an artist, but as a human, I fucking hate that guy.
