Du jia is eating ice cream at at an airport in Southeast Asia. A man and a woman arrive out of the gate, and Du jia goes up to greet them. The woman introduces herself as Wei lan, Vice president Su's secretary. The man is vice president Su.
LWZ walks out of the interrogation room and hands a slip of paper with a phone number to Lan qiao. LWZ asks Lan qiao to contact the owner of the number, who is Yubin's past art student, and to obtain all the artwork they made of Binhai no matter what. LWZ rushes off to take Du jia's call.
XHY knocks on a door and asks for a man called Yang YaoZong, trying to find out more about Zhuo YingChun's past. YYZ's son answers the door; YYZ is sick and his memory has deteriorated. XHY has no luck asking. Just as he is about to leave, YYZ blurts out "Xiao hua ao [literal translation = little flower jacket]. YYZ's son realizes who they are asking about.
Lan qiao calls the art student, Li chunsheng (LCS), and tells him what Zou feng told her. The winter before Yu bin died, he took his art class to Bin hai to do some plein air painting. The night they were leaving, a student lost their camera, so Yu bin drove alone back to the beach to look for it. On the way, he scratched another car and saw two people who, unbeknownst to him, were not supposed to be seen together. To apologize, he drew a portrait of the two of them. Zou feng believes this is the reason Yu bin died. LCS is the student who lost his camera, and so Zou feng thought he must have Yu bin's artwork. LCS agrees to bring them to SID.
YYZ's son recalls ZYC has a son around the same age as him. XHY answers yes - his name was Yang bo. YYZ's son tells them that ZYC was sold into their village to become the crippled man's wife. Not long after, the man died, but the family didn't want to waste the money they spent on her, so they married her off to the dead man's cousin. The cousin died in a car crash soon after, and ZYC moved away with her son. XHY asks where she was sold from. YYZ's son doesn't know, but overheard from the elders that the peddler who brought her gets his "supply" from orphanages where the kids have no background, so no one will come looking. YYZ's son remembers when ZYC first arrived, she spoke like those foreigners on TV. XHY realizes ZYC is potentially from SEA (this may change to somewhere outside of their island).
ZDL (Zhang donglai) is partying in a pool in a tropical place. The champagne pops and everyone hollers. ZDL shakes his hair and drops of water splash on Weiwei. ZDL sits beside her and tells her what a coincidence it is that her company planned their break just when he's here. Weiwei tells him Pei su planned this event last year. ZDL wants to lead her into the back, but the doorbell rings. Du jia and Wei lan are at the door.
LWZ receives a video call from Du jia. Du jia updates LWZ on what he discovered: Heng An orphanage closed 20 some years ago after the principal disappeared. But Du jia was able to find an old staff member, who gave him a photo.
LCS arrives at SID to give Lan qiao a stack of artwork. Lan qiao flips through them, stops at one, and runs inside.
Du jia sends LWZ the photo, and tells LWZ to mentally prepare himself; whoever was at this orphanage probably left with serious mental trauma. LWZ receives a call from XHY, who tells him about ZYC. While LWZ is listening, he looks at the photo that is slowly loading. It's a group picture of 10+ children, ranging from a few years old to teenagers, all standing expressionless. They stand in two rows around two men who are holding a banner between them. The one in the suit is ZYH (Zhou yahou); the other is balding, likely the principal. The banner says something about Zhou Group donation. The photo is dated 1979-12-25.
XHY suspects ZYC came from the same orphanage as Su fei. LWZ finds Su fei in the photo, and indeed, sees ZYC standing beside her. XHY asks LWZ if the person behind all this might also be from this orphanage. Suddenly, Lan qiao barges in. She shows the drawing to LWZ, and in a trembling voice, says "it's Zhang ChunLing".
The photo finally completes its download and LWZ turns back to look at it: beside ZYC, stood Zhang ChunLing and Zhang ZhaoJin.
In the interrogation room, LWZ shows ZZJ the photo. ZZJ is shocked, then a pained expression flashes across his face. ZZJ asks LWZ what he thinks the truth is. LWZ replies "a group of victims who have forgotten their pain, swam to the top of this 'production chain', and became perpetrators". ZZJ pushes the responsibility to his brother and states it has nothing to do with him.
Flashback: a camera flash. The black and white photo turns to real life. ZCL discretely picks out some cracker crumbs from his pocket, licks his fingers, and peeks at ZZJ beside him. ZZJ looks at the front row in a serious expression. ZZJ VO: we were orphans from Heng An orphanage, since we were 6/7 years old. Su fei was younger, but she had been there the longest... In the distance, ZYH holds Su fei's hand, and walks her to the front row. ZZJ VO: she was only 14 at the time, but ZYH was already eager to harvest her... ZYH "lovingly" caresses Su fei's head. Su fei looks towards ZZJ as if asking for help.
It's night, a girl in a red dress is running in the woods. ZZJ VO: Su fei, run faster, run! Not far in the distance, flashlights, dog barks, shadows of figures approach. ZZJ and ZCJ lock the gate behind them and run after Su fei. The metal gate opens the dog catches up to them. ZCL lets go of ZZJ and tells him to run first. ZCL waves his wooden stick at the dog. ZZJ looks back to see the dog attacking ZCL. The people arrive and they beat up ZCL. ZCL mouths at ZZJ to run. ZZJ's eyes water, and he lets go of Su fei, then runs towards ZCL to protect him. ZZJ VO: from that day on, I thought to myself, even though we are not related by blood, he will always be my younger brother.
ZZJ closes his eyes, as if this memory has drained him. LWZ asks, if ZCL is his brother, then what about Huo xiao and Yang... they've known each other for 20 years and fought by each others' side in life and death situations. They've done nothing to wrong him. When they were killed by ZCL, what was ZZJ thinking? Aren't they his brothers too?
ZZJ replies he is most sorry to Huo xiao and Yang. LWZ: they trusted you so much - I trusted you too. ZZJ replies he knows he's disappointed them, but no matter if SID believes it or not, he truly doesn't know everything that happened. When they investigated the Seine after Huo xiao's case, he knew the Seine belonged to ZCL, but he thought at most it was illegal gambling.
Flashback, 10 years ago: ZCL nervously explains to ZZJ that the Seine is his, but he had no idea what was going on. Huo Xiao's death has nothing to do with him. ZZJ is angry, but ZCL begs to be let off this hook and for ZZJ to save him again, just like before.
ZZJ was persuaded by ZCL. And that case... the evidence was all there, so he had no reason to pursue further. LWZ questions whether ZZJ truly believes that, having known Huo xiao for so many years. ZZJ tells LWZ he avoided thinking about Huo xiao, because he knew Huo xiao was wronged, but it's too hard for him to accept the only explanation behind why he was wronged.
LWZ sums up the events that occurred: ZCL had ordered Huo xiao to be killed, then all evidence destroyed in the fire. ZCL then had "Laomeizha" and a few other business owners provide fake testimonies to frame everything on Huo Xiao. ZJJ supposes this is what had happened, but tells LWZ they should ask ZCL for the details because ZCL began to keep secrets from him after that.
LWZ asks if he ever suspected the real reason for Yang's death, because Yang had investigated his way to the Seine. The day he appeared in the underpass was not by chance. The criminal there was a trap, and if it were not for the old lady with her dog, the criminal would have attacked Yang anyways. Not only was Yang killed, his wife and child are affected too. One is now dead, the other a killer blinded by hatred. ZZJ watches as LWZ continues: "They didn't have to die. Zhang ju, ask yourself, all these years, did you really not have even an inkling of what was going on? When Yang and the rest of them were searching up and down for evidence, did you ever think about the person behind it all that you let off the hook - your younger brother ZCL?" ZZJ covers his face and cries.
Luo cheng watches the interrogation. He makes a call and tells the other end to take action.
It's night. LWZ, XHY, Lan qiao, and team arrive at ZCL's house. LWZ barges in first with gun in hand. Lan qiao finds ZCL's passport and a plane ticket for 8pm tonight. Something important must have happened that messed up his escape plans. Du ju arrives telling them ZCL escaped, and orders the team to watch the city borders and find ZCL. Du ju then tells LWZ that this case is too close to SID - they will turn it into a different team to continue investigations. LWZ asks Du ju quietly: if he and Luo cheng had suspected ZCL for a while and had been keeping him under surveillance, how was he able to escape? Du ju asks everyone else to leave.
LWZ realizes the anonymous reports Du ju showed him (in ep 1) were sent to Du ju by Luo cheng. Du ju explains that the organization's killings in the past couple of years gained the attention of the investigative team. Luo cheng had suspected there was a security breach. In He zongyi's case, ZZJ stepped down to avoid conflict of interest, and Luo cheng took this opportunity to set up their plans. LWZ finds it difficult to speak. Why didn't they tell him anything, did they suspect him too? Du ju tells LWZ to go home and rest, but LWZ refuses to leave until they tell him what their plan of action for tonight is.
Lan qiao nervously peeks through the crack in the door. XHY wants to too, but is afraid it would be considered breaking the rules. LWZ angrily bursts through the door and the two of them scatter.
LWZ drives down the road. Flashback: LWZ deduces Du ju and Luo cheng let ZCL escape on purpose as bait to lure in FSY. But in order to clear out the roots of both organizations, they need a hook for the bait. And the hook this time... LWZ's eyes widen. [Flashback: Pei su giving him a comforting smile. "Going to the investigative team right now is my safest option. Shixiong, we should trust Du ju and captain Luo, right?" ] ... is Pei su.
At ZCL's house, Du ju looks down at the moving red dot on his phone, his expression serious. Flashback: Pei su sits alone in the room. The door opens, and Du ju comes in. Pei su thanks Du ju for his protection.
Pei su asks Du ju if he has the teams' trust now that vice president Su has contacted them. Du ju replies that Su has turned in all the content regarding Guangyao fund, which includes direct evidence of ZCL's illegal activities 3 years ago. This also involves PCY. Pei su tells Du ju not to worry - he has foreseen all the end possibilities when he first called Du ju. [Flashback: Pei su at the window, on a call with Du ju (ep 24). Pei su tells Du ju he would like to collaborate.] Pei su: "even though LWZ talks a lot, he did indeed teach me many things, one of the most important being that any action will receive judgement, and the judge is the law. So I've made up my mind from the moment I called you, that no matter who is involved in these past 30 years, the 3 generations of grudge and resentment, I am willing to hand it all over to you and Capt Luo (Luo Cheng) and the law to judge. Du ju, can I ask now, now that ZCL is exposed, what are we to do next?"
Du ju pauses, and looks through the mirror at Luo cheng on the other side. Luo cheng stands in front of the glass, looking at Pei su. Du ju tells Pei su that they have control of ZCL and are ready to capture him whenever he moves. Pei su asks about FSY. Du ju frowns and says even though Pei su's memories are effective, they cannot be used as direct evidence. They would have to keep waiting. Pei su disagrees: FSY has changed; he is no longer that gentle and refined professor. Revenge has become his excuse. Once ZCL is caught, he will only hide deeper in the shadows. Pei su tells Du ju he has a fail-proof plan. Luo cheng frowns, and asks through the ear piece to Du ju: what plan? Du ju looks at Pei su, and Pei su smiles confidently.
Du ju stares at the red dot on his phone. Pei su VO: ZCL seems like a CEO, but in his bones he is a criminal. He doesn't care about anything in this world, except for his son, ZDL. ZCL in a car, looking at a photo on his phone: ZDL and a crowd of people in bikinis. Behind them are Su cheng and Wei lan.
In his car in a park, "You raise me up" plays. Pei su VO: so the best method, is to temporarily let ZCL free, then using ZDL as bait, allow FSY to capture ZCL. And we will be the ones capturing them all. The phone rings, the same song as the car radio. Pei su listens for a while, puts on a different pair of glasses, then answers the call. It's ZCL. ZCL thinks Pei su has ZDL as hostage and Pei su keeps up the act. Pei su says he won't keep a grudge about ZCL hiring a hit on PCY, and wants to "collaborate", essentially taking back ownership of the organization like PCY had once told him he would. ZCL sends people out to pick up Pei su to meet, then hangs up.
Pei su puts his phone aside and the fake smile on his face fades. He places his hand gently over his eyes, the way LWZ does in his dreams, as if gathering courage.
Flashback: just as Du ju is about to leave, Pei su asks Du ju for a favor. Pei su's smile fades, and he looks at Du ju sincerely: "Can you hold off on telling LWZ about this plan?" Du ju turns around. Pei su smiles slowly, "because although it's a fool-proof plan, it has a tiny problem-"
Pei su, with his hand over his eyes, lets out a long sigh. Pei su VO: "-and that is, I might not make it back alive."
In the car, Lan qiao reports to LWZ that they found Pei su's phone location - it's at Jiexin park. LWZ grits his teeth and steps on the gas. The car races into the darkness.
A fog descends. Pei su's car is hidden in specks of trees. LWZ's car approaches. LWZ, Lan qiao, and XHY run towards Pei su's car. It's pitch black inside, "You raise me up" plays faintly through the glass. LWZ yanks open the car door. The music gets louder. There's no one inside. LWZ looks around and sees a broken pair of glasses on the ground.
Flashback: In the rearview mirror, a car approaches Pei su's. Pei su watches as 2 people get off the car, while he leisurely spins his badge. He slides his phone into his pocket, then opens the door. One of the hitmen search Pei su's body while on call with ZCL. The hitman takes Pei su's phone. Pei su tells ZCL if he doesn't see ZCL's face in an hour, his people who have ZDL might take action. The clock hits 11:00pm. The other hitman tells them to sit in the back. Pei su thinks this second person's voice sounds familiar, and turns back to look at him. But hitman 2 has lowered his head and hitman 1 is waiting for Pei su to step into the car. A noise behind him, and Pei su looks back to see hitman 1 collapse on the ground. Hitman 2 raises his head - it's the fake security guard at Longyuncheng. He tases Pei su unconscious.
Pei su lies unconscious in the backseat of the car. The driver smiles coldly, yanks Pei su's glasses off, and snaps it in half to reveal the GPS hidden inside. The car drives off, leaving the broken glasses on the ground.
Transition from the broken glasses to a policeman picking it up and placing it into an evidence bag. The area has been caution-taped off with police busy collecting evidence. LWZ sits on the side, contemplating. XHY calls for LWZ, and LWZ darts into the tent. The GPS has an audio recording device that will start up upon contact with air. They play the audio, and hear ZCL and FSY's phone conversation. ZCL realizes FSY has taken Pei su. FSY tells ZCL "where everything started is where everything will end".
Lan qiao and XHY rush to go to the Seine, but they see LWZ standing in place. They are not at the Seine. This must be a place only he and ZZJ know about. Everyone waits for LWZ, but LWZ curves his back and holds his knees, as if this is the only way he can remain standing. He lowers his head, a sigh escapes his lips like a single fallen leaf in an autumn breeze.
LWZ's breath transitions to Pei su's. A bag gets lifted off Pei su's head. Flickering lights, blurry faces, candles in the dark, hum of people's voices. Pei su shakes his head, then hears the sound of a wheelchair. He smiles, but then gets kicked in the chest by the driver. Pei su coughs for a long while, and when he finally catches his breath, says, "how barbaric, professor Fan, your subordinate friend was hands-on with me the entire way here. This is not the way to welcome your most intimate collaborator, is it?"
The driver is about to act again when FSY lets out a chuckle and gently stops him. The driver is very obedient and backs up. The wheelchair approaches and Pei su struggles to lift his head to look. WRB pushes the wheelchair out from the shadows. FSY's face slowly appears in the light. After 8 years, this face is in front of Pei su again. FSY says: long time no see, good boy."
