I really hope Tangled doesn't get too "dark". I think the hurt incantation was a bit much for me.
Well, one thing that I really like about Tangled’s writing, I think it does a good job balancing the dark elements with the light. Anytime something bad happens, something good usually follows.
Sure, things are bound to get more intense as we draw nearer to the show’s climax, but we also already know there’s a happy ending waiting for us when all is said and done. We don’t need to worry about whether or not the characters we love will be okay, we’re told ahead of time that they will. So in the meantime, we can just enjoy seeing how they get from here to there.
But I also have to say, I really respect the care that the writers of this show put into it. Nothing is ever just “angst just for the sake of angst,” every dark or morbid thing that’s happened so far has had a very clear purpose in furthering the story, it’s all working towards the development of the characters themselves:
Varian’s downward spiral served to push both him and other characters out of their set limits and into much wider territory (both physically and figuratively speaking.) Without it, Rapunzel may never have left Corona or realized that the rocks were actually guiding her somewhere.
Cassandra’s slow progression to villainy revealed a crack in her carefully constructed armor; we’re seeing this strong and self-reliant person cracking under all the pressure that she’s put on herself over a long period of time. She’s finally starting to see that the identity she’s built up of herself in her mind is based entirely around one thing, and without that one thing, she has no idea who she is anymore.
Eugene, who was content being a former-thief that changed his ways for the sake of love, is now having his old identity stripped away and replaced with potential he never knew he had. Not only that, but it’s been following him around all his life - it was never left in the past. That’s like discovering your life is actually a tv show.
And then there’s Rapunzel, who has always been this pure, golden, example of light & innocence in the eyes of everyone around her. She’s faced tough circumstances before, sure, but she’s never been the cause of them. But now, all of a sudden, she’s seeing the other side of the spectrum. It’s shown to her that a leader can’t always be a shining beacon of hope to their people. Sometimes the responsibilities we’re given are not ones we would choose for ourselves, sometimes they take a serious toll our conscience. It’s easy to be a giver of life and healing, but not so rewarding to be a harbinger of death and pain. Yet a leader has to do both.
Everybody is going through their own crucible right now, and personally, I’m really excited to see how much they’ll have changed once they’re out.
So I know it’s getting a bit intense, but believe me, it’s all for good reason. The original movie had all the same elements of darkness & light, it was just on a much smaller scale (which makes sense, given that it was a much more limited setting.) This show is taking the world of Tangled and expanding it, both the good & the bad; the pure & the chaotic.
Besides, at the end of the day, the contrast is still clear: the true evil (in this case, Zhan Tiri) is still the enemy of good (Rapunzel & Eugene, Corona, and I believe their friends will be on the right side of the battle in the long-run. People may falter sometimes, but that doesn’t always mean they’re lost.)
So take heart, the story is far from over. And I believe the ending will be worth waiting for. ❤
