There's a .txt file on my laptop created 12/2/2020
It starts like this...
I'm not not not not not not doing a Bass playlist. But if I was: "In a moment that would transcend anger to high art" (I said I would do a playlist when I got 100 followers back in December 2020 ;_;)
This has been a exercise in madness. I've picked up this thing and put it back down a hundred times. I started seriously working on it again last July, but that ended in what the kids these days call a crashout.
Part of the problem is that I get super neurotic about playlists. Here's a rant I wrote about the problem when I first started toying with it back when I did my BassRock playlist.
Deeply regretting the idea of a Bass playlist. Combine "I can never remember the names of artists or song titles" with "hella picky about character playlists: songs must (a) fit thematically, (b) have appropriate lyrics, and (c) offer a variety while still maintaining a cohesive feel". I've been combing through artists' discographies and approximately 1.2 zillion playlists, from general anti-hero and villain and failures playlists, to specific ones (Vegeta, Killmonger, etc). Here's the sort of problems I'm running into. -It would be all too easy for this to turn into "The Angry White Boy Collection". There are so many, many songs from the various subgenres of Rock/Punk/Metal that are about formless anger and rebellion and the need to prove yourself, with lyrics generic enough to fit any scenario. How the heck can one mere mortal filter through them and select the right ones? -Alternatively, rap and hip-hop lyrics aren't generic enough. They are almost always extremely specific and often very personal. (That or word salad.) To illustrate, let's look at the Black Panther soundtrack album. Ostensibly, "King's Dead" is Killmonger's song, and the hook for the song evokes his attitude (that T'Challa is a fraud), but the lyrics only tangentially relate to him. Meanwhile, "All The Stars" is a a song for T'Challa, with the hook about romance, but when you look at the lyrics for the actual verses: Fuck you and all your expectations I don't even want your congratulations I recognize your false confidence and calculated promises all in your conversation I hate people that feel entitled Does this sound like it's from the Black Panther's POV? Or Killmonger, who feels betrayed and abandoned; who thinks his brother is entitled and cheated him out of his birthright; whose Wakandan family expected him to fail? There are a lot of great rap songs that have the right feelings and fit thematically but the lyrics just don't work. Also I'm trying to keep these songs clean and the radio edits are often hacked to bits. -And any slow, solemn songs, anything acoustic, anything soulful, doesn't fit Bass personality-wise even if it's lyrically and thematically appropriate. Which brings us back to: for this to turn into "The Angry White Boy Collection".
I struggled, and failed, to have a diverse mix here. It's still very Angry White Boy heavy (and yet! leaves so many great AWB songs on the table... I didn't even include Trapt "Headstrong"! 😩) Pretty much the only part I feel good about is that I solicited a lot of opinions and used a lot of songs recommended from various people who've posted over the years about how X song by Y artist reminds them of Bass.
But I can't keep picking at and tweaking this thing forever. So I set a specific goal and... it snuck up on me.
So I've been scrambling the last 24 hours or so to get this presentable. Without further ado:
