'Right thing to do': JJ Bean gives Ontario minimum wage to Vancouver staff

The company increased the price of products to offset the cost of wage increases

Regular JJ Bean customers may have noticed that the price of a full-bodied cup of Railtown has risen by a few cents.

The company, which has stores in Toronto and Vancouver, increased the price of its products from one to three per cent on Jan. 1 to offset Ontario's minimum wage hike, which went from $11.60 to $14 an hour.

When the company had to increase wages for its Ontario employees to meet provincial law, it decided to also increase staff pay in Vancouver.

"We couldn't treat one set of staff differently than another staff. So we just decided to bite the bullet and do what is right for everybody," said John Neate, founder of JJ Bean.

Vancouver has a Chinese New Year parade every year, which I have been to a couple times, including when I was in elementary school and my cheerleading squad participated - don't ask, I have no idea.

I was thinking that this would be such a wonderful activity to do for a family photography session, but I didn't have any bookings that day. I still really wanted to go down to take some shots, so Dan and I went. He was a tad hungover, but a good sport.

We didn't have a chance to eat beforehand, so after a couple hours we badly needed food and coffee and went for breakfast burritos at JJ Bean Woodwards.

Still can't get over that one of the grounders from The 100 comes into my work all the time. He loves vanilla lattes apparently. Maybe he can introduce me to Clarke so I can win her over and we can get married. I don't know.
