On this day 15 years ago, we lost Sifu Larry Hartsell. There are many stories about how great of a fighter he was. He was a soft spoken, very humble man who was a great teacher with attention to detail to each student he worked with. To say my time with him was invaluable is certainly an understatement. There was always a lot behind such an intense look from Sifu Larry Hartsell. One of the Chinatown JKD group, having had met Bruce Lee in 1964 with Guro Dan Inosanto, Larry Hartsell put his early training with Bruce Lee on hold to serve in Vietnam. After his service he returned to the Chinatown school and was well known for his fighting skill. Possessing powerful punches and lighting quick kicks with incredible knock out power, Larry was formidable. After suffering a hip injury in an automobile accident and his ability to throw high kicks diminished, he was encouraged by Bruce Lee and Dan Inosanto to reinvent himself and he dived into a deep study of the grappling arts, which was where he started with wrestling and Judo. That reinvention helped to shape the legend we know as one of the premiere JKD fighters and as the JKD Grappling expert.
