Perfect - James Maddison
This is my first attempt at a blurb - hope you enjoy! Please feel free to tell me where I can improve x
James and I were lying in bed watching a movie, snuggled up against each other under a blanket. A bowl of popcorn sat on my lap, and we’d unconsciously grab a handful every few minutes, only realising when the bowl was full of kernels.
A loud cry from the baby monitor took us out of the trance we were in from the film. James shut his eyes and put his head against the headboard, while I just sighed. It’d taken him half an hour to get Lewis to sleep, and tonight was one of the better nights.
‘We were so close,’ James muttered. ‘It would’ve been the first time in two weeks if he hadn’t woken up.’
He began to slide his legs off the bed when I put my hand on his arm.
‘No, I’ll get him. You did a great job earlier, it’s my turn,’ He smiled thankfully, kissing my hand which was laced with his before letting me go.
I went down the hall and pushed the door open, seeing Lewis twisting and turning in his cot, crying his eyes out. Leaning over the cot, I tickled his belly lightly to see if it was the company he needed. It wasn’t, as he proceeded to cry even more. I picked him up and lifted him in the air to smell his behind, grabbing the milk bottle by his bed when hunger remained the only possible explanation.
It took a moment, but he finally took the milk, sucking on the bottle for about three seconds before swatting it away. This was unexpected, and caused me to drop the bottle, but not before a good half of the contents spilled down my top.
‘Brilliant,’ I murmured to myself. I sighed once more and bent down to pick the bottle up, Lewis still crying on my hip.
I moved him around so he was resting against my chest, the other side to the milk spillage. I gently rubbed his back and shushed him, desperate to make the monotonous screaming stop.
‘Do you want your teddy?’ I picked up a small fox toy that Ben has gifted us on the day of his birth, but it was rejected. ‘No? Okay then. How about some music, hm? Do you want mummy to sing to you?’
Of course I wasn’t expecting an answer, so began to quietly sing ‘Twinkle Twinkle’ to him. By the end of the song, he was only crying more intensely, the noise now giving me a headache.
‘Didn’t like that one, huh? How about a song that I like instead?’ I bit my lip for a moment, thinking, when the perfect song came into my head.
‘When the night has come, and the land is dark, and that moon is the only light you see. No I won't be afraid, no I won't be afraid. Just as long as you stand, stand by me.’
Lewis began to calm down slightly, to my surprise. I smiled softly to myself and walked over to the window in his room. I pulled back the curtain and gazed outside at the night sky, searching for stars as I continued.
‘If the sky that we look upon, should tumble and fall. And the mountains should crumble to the sea, I won’t cry, I won't cry, no I won't shed a tear. Just as long as you stand, stand by me’
I slowly sung more quietly as the crying stopped, and felt Lewis nestle into my shoulder. By the last line, I was whispering. I gently turned my head to look at him and checked that he was asleep, smiling satisfied when he was. I went over to the cot and carefully placed him down, draping his blanket over him, watching as he slept peacefully.
As I turned to leave, I saw James leaning against the doorframe, phone in his hand. He just looked at me, a genuine smile on his lips.
‘How long were you standing there?’ I asked quietly as I left the room and shut the door.
‘About thirty seconds. I heard you singing,’ I blushed, embarrassed, and looked down to the floor awkwardly. He lifted my chin up with his finger, making my eyes meet his. ‘You’re amazing, you know that?’
‘You didn’t film it, did you?’ I signalled down to his phone. ‘You better not have filmed me signing.’
He chuckled as he shook his head. ‘No, don’t worry. I did take a photo, though.’ He held his screen up to show me his wallpaper. In it, I stood by the window looking outside, as Lewis slept on my shoulder, eyes shut and my shirt bunched in his hand, the moonlight lighting up the room. I smiled at it.
‘He’s perfect, isn’t he?’
‘You both are,’ He pressed a kiss to my lips for a moment before pulling away. ‘Come on, we’ve got a film and a new bowl of popcorn to finish.’
Look at his crazy beard! He still looks cute af though. 🥰
