Another factor that I think causes US car prices to be so much lower than other places is our overwhelming need for them. The majority of people in the US don’t have access to any sort of reliable public transportation and so much of the country is rural that people need cars, so they can easily keep prices lower to keep us reliant on driving to keep themselves in business (it’s why the oil companies lobby so hard in the US against public transportation)
Same in Finland, exactly the same (except the lobbying), but car prices are still high.
People in Finland are using the oldest cars in Europe because only a few can afford new and good cars.

Well, to be fair, I’m not sure NOT having a literary agent is actually possible if your goal is to be traditionally published, especially if you’re aiming for a big NY publisher. Simon & Schuster would only deal with a literary agent so for my negotiations with them, I had to have one. No exceptions. They won’t deal with an author directly, only agents. So yeah, I could’ve refused, but that would’ve meant no contract, so...
If traditional publishing is your dream and your dream publisher expects you to act this way, I guess then you’re shit out of luck. Hopefully it worked out well for you.
I just think we have so many options today and traditional publishers know that too. I feel that an IP-lawyer is more fitting for negotiations with publishers and not an agent but I don’t see the point of traditional publishing anyway.
