MAASAI MBILI ARTISTS' COLLECTIVE Saturday 18th April 2020 Statement In response to the world wide outbreak of COVID-19 and the gradual rise of infections in Kenya, the Kibera based artist collective MAASAI MBILI have embarked on a series of activities to sensitize their immediate neighbours as well as the online community. Some of the activities they are involved in include-making and free distribution of hand-washing detergent to artists and neighbours; wall art with COVID-19 literature, online research; social media campaign, fashioning and free distribution of face masks to artists and neighbours, free distribution of weekly nutrition pack for artists of the Collective and their families; film screenings; production of COVID-19 related music, digital photography and videos; provision of surgical gloves to members of the Collective; providing art therapy workshops as well as logistical support to the 50 kids of Mama Pamela's children rescue centre, Paradise Children's Home. The project was initiated by Kevo Stero, Ronald Ronnics and Joakim Kwaru who have been involved with the Canadian non-profit, The Great Gathering previously. Other artists involved are Guta Defere Guta, Maina Mbuthia, James Dundi Obat, Anitah Kavochy, Sharon Akinyi, Xavier Lee Makokha, Alfayo-the only way and Vincent Masinde. The work will cover Kianda Village, Fort Jesus, Ayani, Olympic and Soweto West.
