Far less scary than it is humorous, this film is classic Don Knotts.  As Knotts’s character, Luther, works to discover if the Simmons mansion is really haunted, hijinks and gags ensue.  A number of actors and actresses from The Andy Griffith Show make appearance, as do a number of actors from other popular sitcoms of the time, making this a sort of mashup of the best character actors and actresses of the 1960s.  With all these names in the same film, it’s no wonder that the story is hilarious, portraying the drama, nosiness, and friendliness of a small town to a T.  That doesn’t mean there isn’t a good murder to solve, though, and the funny yet frightening events and the spooky organ music actually manage to evoke a twinge of fright amidst the laughter.  The Ghost and Mr. Chicken certainly won’t keep you up at night in fear, but it will make you laugh, and you’ll have a good time trying to figure out what exactly happened to Luther, as well as what actually happened to Mr. and Mrs. Simmons.
