Redux, a short film by Joaquin Pedro Valdes
"Where are the youth who will generously pour out their blood to wash away so much hate, so much crime, so much abomination?"
I can say, once in my life I experienced how what it feels like, being a "blind" singer on the streets of Manila. (of course there was some acting involved on my part...but I think I played the part pretty well. :)
Joaquin (director) said "You have to stay in character, you can't tell anyone that this is for a music video, I'm going to leave you now, and you won't know where I am, but i'll be filming the whole time"...and so he left me sitting on the side of the street in front Sta. Rita Church in Binondo.
I remember 3 kinds of people who passed by...
1. A bunch with a big "is this for real?" look on their faces.
2. Majority would pass by and didn't care less.
3. But there were those who stayed and even listened as I strummed my guitar and sang (trying to maintain a dead-stare-in-mid-air-look on my face).
...I got roughly P20 within that whole hour of playing under the hot sun.
That was indeed an experience I will never forget. I went home that day utterly humbled and with a new found respect and love for them that come day in a day out, singing in the streets. Realizing that whether or not they get much from it, the music they make is enough to keep their spirits alive and well...enough to keep them going and hold on to their belief that one day...music will save their lives.
Check out the video GRATEFUL.
