Job: From The Bible Book by Book by Josiah Tidwell- The Argument 1. There is a conference between God and Satan and the consequent affliction of Job. 2. The first cycle of discussion with his three friends in which they charge Job with sin and he denies the charge. 3. The second cycle of discussion. In this Job's friends argue that his claim of innocence is further evidence of his guilt and impending danger. 4. The third cycle. In this cycle Job's friends argue that his afflictions are just the kind that would come to one who yielded to temptations such as those to which he is subject. In each of the three cycles of discussion with his friends, each argues with Job except that Zophar remains silent in the third cycle. 5. Elihu shows how Job accuses God wrongly while vindicating himself and asserts that suffering instructs us in righteousness and prevents us from sinning. 6. God intervenes and in two addresses instructs Job. In the first address, Job is shown the creative power of the Almighty and his own folly in answering God whom animals by instinct fear. In the second address, Job is shown that one should know how to rule the world and correct is evils before one complains at or accuses God. 7. Job prays and is restored. Purpose- The purpose of the book, then, is to justify the wisdom and goodness of God in matters of human suffering and especially to show that all suffering is not punitive. Job's temptation came by stages and consisted largely in a series of losses as follows: 1. his property 2. his children 3. his health 4. his wife's confidence 5. his friends 6. the joy of life 7. his confidence in the goodness of God. From NIV Study Bible- Author: Unknown Audience: God's people Date: Unknown, though Job himself probably lived during the patriarchal period. Theme: The wisdom book deals with the question of whether God is a God of justice in the light of all life's perplexities, such as human suffering. Job 1-2: Job 1:20-21- At this Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he tore his robe and shaved his head. The he fell to the ground in worship and said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised." Job 2:9-10- His wife said to him, "Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!" He replied, "You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?" 1:2- seven sons- An ideal number, signifying completeness. 1:6- "angels came to present themselves"- They came as members of the heavenly council who stands in the presence of God. 1:8- "my servant"- God's acknowledgement that Job had been faithful and loyal to him. 1:19- "mighty wind"- tornado 1:21- Job's faith leads him to see the sovereign God's hand at work, and that gives him repose even in the face of calamity. 2:10- "Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?"- A key theme of the book: Trouble and suffering are not always punishment for sin; for God's people they may serve as a trial or as a discipline that culminates in spiritual gain.
