Jodemy #7
#7: “Go on, tell me. Tell me you don’t love me.”
(characters Jodie and Jeremy belong to Soap and Dirty Sexy Money respectively)
Jodie stood with his hands clenched at his sides. “You slept with my cousin? How could you?”
“I didn’t mean to!” cried Jeremy. “It just–happened.”
“Things like that don’t just happen! Why would you do that?”
Jeremy flinched back from the steel in Jodie’s voice. “I’m sorry! Please don’t–”
“Don’t what? Don’t be angry? I think I have a right to be angry!”
“You do! I just–I can’t do this any more.” Jeremy let his head fall into his hands.
“Can’t do what?”
“This. The relationship thing. I’m not cut out for it.” He turned and paced away.
“No, wait,” said Jodie, reaching out, but Jeremy shrugged him off.
“I can’t. The spark died a long time ago. It’s time we accepted that.”
Jodie’s voice cracked as he said, “Are you saying you don’t love me?”
Jeremy stared at the floor.
“Say it,” Jodie snapped, his voice cold. “Go on, tell me. Tell me you don’t love me.”
“Fine.” Jeremy turned and raised his head, meeting Jodie’s eyes. “Fine. I don’t love you any more.”
Jodie stepped back. “Well,” he said, his voice shaky. “I guess this is it, then.”
“I guess it is.”
“Cut!”
The two men looked over at Thea, who walked over with a wide smile.
“That was great, you guys,” she said, before turning to the rest of the group. “Let’s give them a hand!” The ten or so people seated in the half-circle of folding chairs applauded. Jeremy took a bow.
“Jodie, good job getting in touch with your emotions,” said Thea, turning back to the couple. “Jeremy, I liked how you used the silence there. Sometimes that’s the loudest thing. Any other notes?”
A small redheaded woman raised her hand. “It was a little cliche,” she said.
“So was the prompt, give them a break,” cut in a woman with pink hair, rolling her eyes. “And they only had ten seconds to get ready.”
“For what they had, they really made it real,” said a bald man in a plaid shirt. Jeremy wished he knew more of his classmates’ names.
“I agree,” said Thea. “Good job, you two. Okay, Vonnie, Cheryl, you’re up.”
Jodie squeezed Jeremy’s hand as they sat down. “I was wrong,” he murmured. “Improv class was a great idea.”
Jeremy grinned. “Glad I signed us up?”
“It’s getting me back in touch with my directing roots, at least.”
Jeremy laughed. “You know I’d never actually cheat on you, right?”
“You better not.” Jodie grinned and squeezed his hand again.
Jeremy smiled and dropped a kiss on his boyfriend’s cheek. “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
