Manami Shimizu of Miyako City Ms. Shimizu also works at the design company Art Eriy’s, helping to run the blog and promote their products. She particularly loves how Ms. Omi’s choices of art and clever phrases together touch people’s hearts.

“It’s what everyone always recommends, but if you’re in Miyako, you just have to see Jodogahama! Japan has four very distinct seasons, you know? The beaches at Jodogahama have a totally different feel depending on whether it’s spring, summer, autumn and winter. But I only realized that after I grew up. When I was younger, Jodogahama was just this place that was always there. It was so close that I just would never go. The scenery didn’t do anything for me. If I want to go to the ocean, there’s the ocean right by my house, so there’s no need to go to Jodogahama. But as I grew older, I realized that it was a place that could heal my heart and calm my spirit. I hope other people can see that too.”

Yosuke Sasaki of Miyako City After the disaster of 2011, Mr. Sasaki knew he wanted to help preserve and protect the natural resources that surround the city of Miyako. He now works at the Jodogahama Visitor’s Center, a gateway to the entire Sanriku coastline and hub for guests of both the Sanriku Geopark and the Michinoku Coastal Trail. He has also started a non-profit called the Jodogahama Nature Guides, where he plans tours bursting with local flavor.

“The Jodogahama Visitor’s Center serves as a central base for people visiting the park. We travel throughout the area to get information and photos, and we also draw up maps ourselves. We’re also a hub for hikers of the Michinoku Coastal Trail. We have a great example in something like the Appalachian Trail, where people come from all over the world to hike the trail and meet local people. On the MCT, you can do all that, and also learn about the tsunami and the reconstruction. My Nature Guides group also plans short trips up and down the trail, with a piping hot bowl of tonjiru soup at the end. We try to provide a service that only a native of Miyako can give – if you walk the trail with us, you can talk to someone local, learn the local dialect, and find out some things you wouldn’t find in a travel brochure. For example, we have something called aramakizake, where we hang salmon from our roofs to dry and preserve it during the winter. This is a normal sight for us, but someone who’s visiting, and then they see a bunch of salmon hanging from the awnings – that’s something they’ll ask about, and we can tell them all about our local lore.”

“You won’t go wrong coming to Sanriku. You’ll see really cool rocks and beautiful views of the ocean. Even in the winter, the ocean takes on a deep blue tone that you won’t see any time else. It may be a little difficult to get to Jodogahama with the lack of public transportation, but those willing to make the effort will have the motivation to learn the story of the area. Jodogahama didn’t always look like this. Iwate didn’t always have this jagged coastline. It took millions of years for the earth to form these features. And millions of years from now, this will all be gone. That’s the power of nature.”
