EdFringe 2012 - Prefringe
This morning, the other Fringers and I are making our way from Leeds to Edinburgh. Our train departed at 7am and I’d been told that, unlike the last few jaunts Fringewards, I was absolutely not allowed to be a grumpy little ballbag on the journey. Did I manage it? Check in tomorrow to find out. (Almost certainly not).
Anyway, I thought I’d get the blogball rolling with a few recommendations before we even cross the border into Scotland.
This is cheating a bit but I wanted to shout about some shows that are at the Fringe this year but that I’ve already seen elsewhere. So, unless they’ve made some catastrophic changes to the show content, you should absolutely check out …
Dan Bye - The Price of Everything (tickets) Ever wondered how much the composite parts of your own body would fetch on the black market? Neither have I. But, lucky for us, writer and performer Daniel Bye has. This is part lecture, part stand-up, all wonderful. A very entertaining hour and you get a free glass of milk. Everyone loves milk. Except for those who don’t. And those who medically can’t drink it. That’s no laughing matter.
Translunar Paradise (tickets) YOU WILL CRY YOUR EYES OUT. This is one of the best pieces of theatre I have ever seen. Utterly beautiful, stunningly crafted, deliberately blub-inducing. It’s the story about a life-long love story between a man and a woman… oh my God, I’m going again. Look, just trust me. It’s wonderful. (When I saw the show, the woman next to be was crying so audibly that I thought I might have to escort her out. Really, I thought she was in serious trouble).
What I Heard About the World (tickets) Third Angel and one-man-machine-of-brilliance Chris Thorpe have scoured the country looking for people’s stories of the globe. The show is a combination of music, movement, words, images and, ultimately, these stories. It’s really fantastic stuff. And some of the true stories are exasperatingly outlandish.
Bane: 1, 2 and 3
OH MY GOD. Talk about a fucking amazing production. So I just came out of seeing Bane part 2 (I saw Part One yesterday and Part Three earlier in the week) and I am still gob-smacked by the amazingness of this production. Essentially what it is is a trilogy of action/adventure movies performed entirely by one guy (Joe Bone) and he plays all the characters and does all of the sound effects and all of the action and the only help he has is one guy on guitar doing soundtrack. And he pulls it off in spades. Christ all mighty, it's like the best OSP I've ever seen... But better. Ugh, it's times like these I wish you could record life experiences and that sort of thing because these three productions were unforgettably amazing. Joe Bone, I salute you.
