Another exciting piece of news: Dirtbag: The Legend of Fred Beckey premiers at the SIFF this coming Sunday, and it features the sophomore collaboration between my friend Joe Garber and me in the documentary’s animated segments. (It looks like tickets to the premiere are sold out, but futures screenings should be announced soon.) Dirtbag (directed by David O’Leske) tells the story of notorious mountaineer Fred Beckey, and his nearly eight decades of renegade Alpine adventurism. As someone with a limited amount of outdoor hobbies, I thought Dirtbag was an excellent window into the world of mountaineering, as well as a captivating portrait of American iconoclasm. The film also acts as a thoughtful meditation on themes like ambition, aging, and the rewards of truly abiding to one’s passions, as well as the cost. If you like the outdoors, Pacific Northwest history, or tales of eccentric pioneers, this one’s not to be missed! Very proud to be part of the project!

Studio Q+A: Joe Garber

Linework NW is at its heart a gathering of remarkable creators, editors, illustrators, cartoonists, and publishers who represent some of the best work that is being produced in these mediums today.

Each day from now until the show we will be highlighting the amazing creators of Linework NW in a series of short interviews on their process and studios. Today’s Q+A, conducted by Kinoko Evans, will be spotlighting artist Joe Garber.

Where do you live? I live on Crapitol Hill, in Seattar, Warshingtoon

Where does the majority of your creative practice take place? Home? Studio? Café? Other? Recently I've been super lucky and my friends Kontent Partners have been letting me use their amazing space, they do really sweet photo and video work. Thanks Partners! Other than that I work at home or at cafes... or at friend's houses which I treat like public Cafes.

What are your favorite tools of the trade? When I'm working on narrative things like Pentastation.com I work completely digitally and recently I got an iPad which is pretty damn rad to draw on (I was skeptical at first). When I'm doing the finer arts I use heavy watercolor paper, microns and gouache.

Do you keep any posters, toys, artworks in your creative space for inspiration? YEA! I have a wall of a ton of local artists work and so many of my friends art pieces framed around our apartment. It inspires me to have the work of my freaynds around. 

What are you working on for this year's LineworkNW I'm doing a serial comic called Penta Station, just printed the first volume of that and I'll be premiering it in the U.S. at Linework! I plugged it up top but it's at www.pentastation.com. Also, the second to last Intruder was just released so I'll have those too! Get em while you can, so many amazing people are in the Intruder! Shout out to Marc Palm for being a knight and wrangling all of us.
