Pokemon: Special Pikachu Edition
Review of Pokemon: Yellow Version. The Nintendo Game Boy, Game Freak RPG. 1998
In this world, exist creatures called Pokemon. Some people collect pokemon. Some battle them. And some even heal, or study them. With so many things to do with these pokemon, it's no wonder the world isn't a boring place.... But, some people like to use pokemon for criminal activity. And one group stands out, atop these kinds of people. Team Rocket. Led by the refined, and wealthy, Giovanni, Team Rocket can be associated as a Mafia, what, with the Italian name and all. Pokemon Yellow is a refined, and re-released version of Pokemon Red & Blue. Set to release with Pokemon: The First Movie, the game became more like the Anime than its predecessors. Though overall, the game mechanics remained the same. Third-Person, Top Down Battle/Adventure RPG. The game though, adds more Character than before. With a Pikachu that follows behind you, and Jessie & James of Team Rocket, the story was more relatable, thanks to the Anime. The story though, is really nothing more than a simple excuse to give you opportunities for battle. It is your primary objective to catch pokemon; train them; and use them to Battle the 8 Gym Leaders of the Kanto Region, and collect their badges. So that you can then challenge the Elite 4, at Indigo Plateau. Coupled in with Professor Oak's task that you complete his Pokedex why capturing and receiving data all on all 150 pokemon. But, you also have a rival. Who wants nothing more than to outdo you, and become the greatest Pokemon Trainer in the world. Though he has no evil intentions. He's just a jerk. While completing these tasks however, you uncover Team Rocket's plots to do, I don't even know what. And along the way, you prevent them from accomplishing their goal. The story of Pokemon is not a story at all, really. But just a list of Objectives you have to complete, to beat the game.
But this game retains it's place as one of the greatest, and definitive titles in the Video Game World, because it is so easy to play. And quite addicting, simplistic. So much variety. With it's Multiplayer system, you can link to your friends games and battle them, or trade pokemon with them to complete your pokedex. And some pokemon only evolve when traded.
Graphics: 3/5 Sure, it's only a Game Boy game from the 90's. But other titles on this system outdo the game easily.
Combat: 5/5 The system is simple, and easy to understand. And with all the pokemon you can catch, it has a good variety of possibilities. And Multiplayer.
Setting: 4/5 The game is set in a pretty small world. But it keeps you occupied. A world of pokemon is creative.
Characters: 4/5 The only reason I would rate this at all, is because of all the pokemon. And being able to talk with your Pikachu is a definite plus over the previous titles. The anime doesn't hurt either.
Story: 1/5 Let's face it. This game has no story. But that doesn't stop it from being a great game.
Music: 2/5 It's Game Boy. Not a lot of music to choose from. And the sound is just annoying at times. It gets stuck in your head. It's always repeating. It's not very original, but it's recognizably Pokemon.
My Rating: 65% In turns of numbers, this is a game to avoid. But numbers don't make a game. The game makes the game. And in my book, this an A ranked game. And therefore, a Must Play. But let's face it. The Monotony of this game isn't for everyone. But even so. Some people just like looking at the cute pokemon.
