I made a page for Volume 2 of the Rescue Bots Zine by @turbofox-zines, which dropped preorders in February and is hopefully entering the shipping phase soon!

This was such a fun opportunity and I love how everyone’s work turned out!

I went into this project wanting to depict as many characters from the main cast as I could, while giving everyone a chance to shine and interact with each other in some less common combinations. This show is really nostalgic for me so I wanted to create a scene that shows that, even years in the future, they all still get together and hang out :) (I haven’t watched all of Academy so this isn’t necessarily compliant with that though haha)

I chose to the setting to be at this time (like twilight ig?) and on a beach to get some summer-y vibes and imply that this piece takes place after a whole day of spending time together (also glowy lights are fun)

Many, many, way too many headcannons from months of RB being the only thing I can think about.

Sigma-17 went into stasis well before the war began and before any murmurs about the uprising or anything related to it started.

Dreadwing was found crashed on wayward island and was helped by the Rescue Bots. Him and Hightide keep Decepticons patrols from discovering the Rescue Bots.

Medix is from a large family and Hotshot is an orphan by himself until he is brought to the academy.

Blades has chronic pain.

Bumblebee and Heatwave do yoga together.

Chase writes fanfiction, extremely good fanfiction. Specifically of old noir films.

Boulder sometimes feels like he got off the easiest out of his teammates. Sure they all lost their home and friends but Boulder got to choose his vehicle mode and dinomode first out of his team and Blades got stuck with alt modes he disliked. Heatwave struggles with the pain of not having been able to do anything to help in past, and not being given the chance to fight in the war to protect what is left of his faction. Meanwhile Boulder has Graham who tries his best to help Boulder with that pain and explore ways to cope by living in every moment of his new life, gaining hobbies, and being a bridge between humanity and Cybertronians. That Chief Burns will pass from his age sooner than later and how Chase will be affected by that while Graham is still young and will be around longer. Boulder got the alt modes he wanted, had the human partner who wanted to understand him and who let him find peace, and who he’d be able to spend years with.

Quickshadow survived the massacre of the Rescue Bots and lived with that trauma for nearly the entire war. Her becoming a secret agent was driven by the need to survive and see through the end of the war and possibly have to rebuild the Resue Bot ranks by herself. However when Optimus Prime told her about Sigma-17 and seeing them brought painful memories of her team and how she couldn’t save them due to her relying on them. She believes fully that if she had been more self reliant that she could’ve saved them.

Quickshadow is a fraud (light hearted) and wasn’t a Rescue Bots before the war. She learned from datapads about them during the war and decided for herself that she’d be a rescue bot and be something good during a time of so much pain.

Grimlock definitely got emotional when Hoist chose to be a trex dinobot like him.

Blades while honored by Medix’s new helicopter mode can’t help his paranoid thoughts from worrying about his mentee. He already worries enough over the recruits to begin with and given Earth’s track record of damaging his rotors on missions he made sure Whirl and Hotshot were capable flyers. However when it came to Medix he hesitated in training him (literally canon tho by Helicopter Heros in Medix saying he is still learning basic flight controls. IGNORE HIM FLYING IN DURING BIG WHEELS I NEED ANGST.) While he does eventually calm his fears enough to train Medix he can’t help but be extremely careful with those 3 during any mission that involves flight. (Dw Blades the universe only targets you.)

Chase was mentee to Streetwise when he was a recruit. Streetwise’s need to pursue to the point of running out of fuel is why Chase has his name.

Heatwave has been the Lobbing champion a few times.

The Velgrox know about the Cybertronain war and saw Cybertron dead which made them believe for a time that Cybertronains were extinct. Unfortunately for them they answered that message Cody and Frankie sent so when they returned home they brought the news that their old enemy is still alive and still very capable of fighting them.

Quint Quarry is still a threat, while he may not go for the Sigma-17 bots anymore he’s heard of other dino bots being spotted in Maine that aren’t from Griffin Rock.

Madeline Pynch is also still a threat and even more so now that she knows the Bots are aliens and that her plans to control a power supply are gone she wants revenge on them. After all the recruits may not know her and the many many companys under her control.

Laserbeak in RBA is actually Buzzsaw trust. (Totally not just so I can make TF earthspark crossover.) mostly because the more I think about the more interesting things can be. Buzzsaw has no criminal record, has no reason to be hostile towards Ratchet (see Wheeljack suggests to put a bomb in tfp laserbeak) and lets say Buzzsaw was lost in space for a long while. Long enough that when Buzzsaw got lost it was during the beginning years of the war and the fight was still for equality and stuff. But now Buzzsaw finds himself in a world where the Decepticons went so far as kill their home and have destroyed so much that newer bots who werent even alive during the war were conditioned to fear and hate him just by his insignia. Now he has the chance to both help a former con like himself find themselves through the hate and pain of others but also help others learn to give decepticons the chance by being a rescue bot.

Many records mentioning Rescue Bots were destroyed during the war which means Sigma-17 is teaching based on their memories which ironically were helped by Morocco erasing them and giving them back.

Whirl is the most excited to graduate by far, and also can’t wait for the day she has her own mentee to teach.

Whirl gets along great with Strongarm and even impresses her with her knowledge on police codes.

Blurr during RBA is just on another planet racing. He deserves a break after all :> (no one tell him he has missed out on two years of being able to train recruits.)

Salvage is still on Earth doing rescue work, he is excited to eventually meet the recruits but he works on more dangerous missions and knows the recruits aren’t ready for that yet.

Chase and Whirl have spent an entire day making snow primes. Strongarm joined them halfway through the day.
