September 2016: Germany (16th-21st)
Stuttgart
Kulturbetrieb Wagenhallen (Culture company Wagenhallen) Luke had located a spot in an industrial area which he believed would be good to stay in the city, this time we google map (satellite view) as a fail safe.
We arrive at what looks like an art college and makeshift bar social area, theres a road running parallel to the brick units and a path that cuts through to the other side which isn't a road. Luke wonders off leaving us to explore the surrounding area, he comes back looking hyped “theres campers here!!” Great i think to myself must mean its kinda legit. Though free camping is legal in Germany I'm pretty sure this place doesn't fit the criteria of what most would describe as a free camping area. But who cares, the worst that could happen is we get moved on by the police.
Manoeuvring some obstacles to make way for the truck and vans we finally arrive at a large open gravel like car park surrounded by metal debris and metal and wooden sculptures, this place is like a scrap yard/gypsy camp. We all were scratching out heads trying to figure it out but a group of men were congregated on a freshly cleared area of fresh soil. Being polite we asked if we were ok to stay for a couple of nights, in my experience Germans usually speak good english/understand you well.. It took a few moments to actually communicate what we were asking and got told to go speak to a man who’s name I've now forgotten. After finally finding him he actually thought Luke, Joe, George and myself were musicians in a band and wed be performing here. We asked what the place was? he explained in the old units it was workshops for art students and the containers where either temporary or permanent whilst the unit workshops were being converted, I'm not entirely sure but the fact is the area was awesome and felt like wed fit into this community.
Wondering around we met some more people asking questions as they were setting up for what looked like an event, they were setting up for a Fixed gear bicycle race ran by a local bicycle shop, told us we should attend and of corse we did and met the owner of the shop who invited us to the shop for coffee. The event featured numerous heats of races around container city following a final heat to declare the champion and runners cup with sprocket medallion prizes and good old german beer. Following the race there was also a skid distance contest on the gravel.. i don't have to elaborate on this. We even did a demo on our bmx’s racing the circuit and also some tricks were performed by Joe and George (the comp dogs) We had fun and enjoyed this first ever event but it got weird, the music being played at the after party i cannot describe and we later met this lady who invited us to here jamming room where she had all sorts of instruments, it smelt like rotten vegetables, it was an uncomfortable environment and i ended up leaving as she became all weird, the guys later left as she had locked herself in the toilet to which somebody mentioned they’d seen needles or something.
Surrounding the container city as we call it was an indoor skatepark which used to be an outdoor concrete park, with fun/different transitions we visited the park when the weather wasn't kind to us. Between the park and where we were staying was one of very man historic stations. It once was a place where the jewish people would depart and never return, heading to various concentration camps including Auschwitz. What remained of the station was just a section of rails and bumpers, with a wall running adjacent to the rails with names of all the people who left this place. With an information board with photos of german soldiers and jewish people being loaded onto the carriages.. to think what was going through their heads being loaded to certain death and also what the soldiers were thinking.. did they all know these people they could’ve known, went to school with or even worked with are going to die because of the SS.
Exploring the city, wanting to ride and seek a vape shop for everyone to load up on vape juice, the city of Stuttgart was like any other in my opinion, very busy and too much going on, some great gothic like building/churches new and old business buildings etc. We stopped off at Basis, remember the bicycle shop i mentioned before well we met up had coffees, took a tour and conversed with the co owners to which the let us test out the electric courier pushbike. Thing was amazing to ride but a very pricey investment but if you work in a built up area driving just isn’t a viable option to deliver a customers custom fixie. Another shop we visited was Kunstform (https://www.kunstform.org/en/) Europes biggest bmx shop (not including UK) the guys were very helpful given us free spokes of all sorted sizes which was greatly appreciated. Picking up supplies, Nath decided he wanted to order a set of bars which we had to wait for when our plans were to leave that day. So a day of waiting is a head of us which caused some tension within the group, that night we sat in a lorry trailer watching John Florences surf film whilst the sky dropped water everywhere, it was our social escape.
thinking about joe and eowells' friendship and now I wanna write that one fic idea where eowells becomes iris's step-dad
September 2016: Switzerland (22nd-25th)
Zurich (Alt-Wiedikon) My last visit to Switzerland was back in 2014 on a motorcycle trip with Chris Hill-Scott and Luke Peeters where we rode threw the Alps and stayed in Brig. On this occasion we found ourselves in Zurich to ride bikes. Which worked out well as we managed to park/camp next to the skate park, Swiss people don't like anything free gratis when it comes to people like us, so we felt maybe our chances of staying where we did would end very quickly. But never were we asked to move on only on our own accord.
The main attraction was the dirt park or as we soon found out it was actually concrete, in our defence the photos looked so “dirty” that it was so hard to tell, the skate park was huge, with a large bowl section at one end and at the other a huge plaza of banks, rails, ledges and vast amounts of skateboarders.
We had fun and even bumped into someone who'd we had not seen since our (Luke and I) first day in Queenstown, New Zealand, Though that evening was a blur in queens towns due to large amounts of booze consumed so Steph the swiss bmxer remembers us by name very well but we couldn't remember at all until we saw a photo taken of the group outside the powder room wearing the popular animal onesies on onesies night all out of our faces.
Zurich is modern, well established and surrounded by beautiful mountains, apart from the high expense of living this place could be ideal for permeant residence, with snow in winter and very warm summers you get the best of both and not the mediocre slightly warm but very inconsistent British summers and shambolic wet and miserable winters.
So what did we get up to, well everyone one was pumped to practically fall out of bed into the skatepark it was ideal, until i picked up a foot injury after over shooting a concrete jump to naively attempt the next which i came short and had to eject, this resulted in the huge foot stomp on solid ground which sent a shock from my foot all the way up my spine it was intense.
Luke, George and Joe all whipped out their go pros and filmed all sorts of angles on bars, body and helmet mounts, watching the footage after was funny, especially of Luke mocking Jack Griffin (our friend back in the uk).
Back in Stuttgart the owner of Basis told us Zurich is the place to party, well the weekend loomed in and there was some Rocket party rave at the lake, everyone was game with high expectations. It sold through the roof prices of alcohol 14.00CHF (Swiss Francs) for a red bull and vodka and beer was something like 9.00CHF. The music was not to my taste but there was a big turn out and the electronic beats were clearly tasteful to the Swiss hipster following. On the advert it stated 10-2 of time, now read it again 10-2 so 10pm to 2am right? No! thats 2pm till 10pm... um ok thats weird but made sense because it was an outdoor event. But this misinterpretation meant even though we got in free the party was near to over by the time we got there.
Nath got drunk and was entertaining for us to witness, its like he is an entirely different person when intoxicated but it a good way. After paying 18CHF in service station for a box of 10 beers we headed back to the vans and chilled for the rest of the evening. Mushroom like clouds of exhaled vapour clouds probably would be very visible as it was a favourite past time for everyone when relaxing. That night i heard sirens as i got comfortable in the roof tent coming ever so close until in a moment the whole tent illuminated neon blue as a police car blasted past “shit” even if they haven't come here to move us on surely they’d come back after they've seen a bloody Defender with a roof top tent erected. Luckily they never as they were in pursuit of some wrong doer.
The next day we venture back to the lake where the the party was before and enjoyed the heat of the sun and coolness of the fresh lake, taking advantage of the public diving board where i humiliated myself doing a gator flip which id only kinda learnt that day. After sun and cool sessions in the lake oh and looking at a hungover Nath we headed back to the skatepark to ride for the final time before leaving the next day.
Hello mods! I'd love a Joe/Earth 2 Harrison drabble! I feel once Joe found out about Jesse he and Harry could bond.
Ok the words were: Bourbon, Hot Dad, Righteous, Emotional, Bridge
I’m sure I wasn’t able to do everything you probably wanted. But I hope you enjoy my attempt! I tried to have them bond in a very true way and I hope I succeed. I have never written either character before xD.
