SEASON 1 EPISODE 10: Get Justice
New objective: find you a girlfriend. What are you looking for? I don’t know, just, like, a person. You need to narrow that down. Well, I don’t know what I like. Yes you do! You need to try harder, dig deep. Okay, um... someone who’s themselves, um... doesn’t care what anyone thinks, smart but still into schlocky films. That’s too narrow. But, I will find you your princess not-so-charming.

I think it would be very easy to read Bree's rejection of John as her "testing him" like her dad says she does and to an extent it is, Bree is constantly testing John all throughout the series, but in this moment I don't think it's a test. I think it's an ending for Bree. She told Rex that she realized "they" were the bad guys and by "they" she meant rich people, she meant her politican father and Rex's rich parents and all the other generational wealth upper class families at Bannerman, she meant herself, because no matter what she does she still can't separate herself from that legacy of exploitation and I'm pretty sure what made her realize how she and the other rich kids were the problem was from the influence of John and his mother Mrs. Baggott. The way they took her in, how their family became her family and when she saw the utter disparities between how Bree lived her life and how John did that's when it really hit her that she was the villain of the story. And is Bree afraid of her feelings for John? Absolutely, because the things she feels for him are a lot stronger than any feelings she'd had for anyone else and part of that comes from how she sees him as the good guy of the story. Part of Bree doesn't want to have to deal with the romantic feelings she has for John, but I think in this scene she is confronting her feelings of not being worthy of John, she is shutting him down now so that he will never realize just how horrible she thinks she is. Bree's rejection of John doesn't feel like she's protecting herself, it feels like she's protecting him
Fingers laced between her own, and Bree turned to find John looking down at her. “Why didn’t you tell me?” "I couldn’t,” she said, desperately hoping he wouldn’t hate her forever. “It was too dangerous for you to know.” "But...” His voice trailed off and Bree watched as weeks of emotion cycled rapidly across his face - anger, frustration, sadness, pride, understanding. “Your dad won’t bail you out this time,” he said at last. “You’ll be on your own.” "I know.” Then he pulled her to him as the police pushed their way into the bleachers, enveloping her fiercely with his arms as if he’d never let her go. “I know you didn’t kill them,” he whispered in her ear. Several pairs of strong arms pried her away from John, but she hardly felt them. The only thing in the world was John’s body pressed tightly against her own, as she gazed up into his eyes. “Bree Deringer,” an officer said. “You are under arrest for the murders of Ronald DeStefano and Richard Creed.” They wrenched her from John’s arms, but her eyes never left his face. There was so much she wanted to say, so much she needed him to know. Her Miranda rights faded into the background as they pinned her arms behind her back and handcuffed her. Still, all she could think about was John. "I love you,” she said. John stared at her silently, then a grin spread across his face. Lopsided and wicked, and every inch Han Solo. “I know.” She smiled as the police lead her away.

I don’t really think she’s a holding hands kind of girl. Yeah, don’t speak for me... I’m not really a holding hands kind of girl. See, I only do it because I know what you’re gonna say.
Do we have to do this today? Yep. Totally essential. If anything, you look less cool.
