When Jordan woke up, he noticed the lack of morning light blinding him, something that he’d grown accustom to in the morning. He sat up, his eyes slowly settling on the clock.

I’ll be right back
For years, the words written plainly on Tom’s chest drove him mad. He heard this phrase at least every day, and every time he heard it fear rooted him to the ground. It made dating hard, to say the least. He wasn’t too sure if he was ready to fear for his partner’s life whenever he would hear that common phrase.
But with time, his heart grew hard, and he forced his mind to forget.
Tom had been good friends with Jordan for a year before anything happened. He couldn’t remember much, but he was sure they were both drunk, and the next second they were suddenly kissing. Everything just clicked instantly, and then–
“I’ll be right back.” Jordan said, suddenly. He pulled away from Tom, who was rooted to the ground. Jordan ran into the bathroom, and Tom barely forced himself to follow a couple of seconds later.
This isn’t fair, Tom thought feverishly, feeling his heart drop a thousand feet. He stopped outside of the bathroom door, We haven’t even started dating yet, we haven’t even-
Jordan almost ran into Tom on his way out, snapping the latter out of his thoughts. Jordan was about to say something until Tom pulled him into a wordless hug.
They were at the airport, sitting next to each other. Tom’s fingers were intertwined with Jordan’s, and the silence between them was almost comforting. Jordan had to fly back home, and Tom couldn’t go with him. At least not yet.
A few minutes passed before Jordan’s flight was called, and he stood up reluctantly, his hand still in Tom’s.
“Don’t miss me too much.” Tom said cheerfully, noticing Jordan’s sad smile. He gave him a quick peck on the lips, and he was glad to see that Jordan was genuinely smiling when he pulled away.
“I’ll do my best.” Jordan said, rolling his eyes. “And it’s not like we’ll be apart for too long anyway. I’ll just be there for a few months, and then I’ll be right back.”
Tom felt his heart stop, and he felt cold sweat begin to form. He wanted to pull Jordan back, beg him to stay, but he was already gone.
After the six hour flight, Jordan found he had 26 texts and 4 missed calls from Tom.
Despite the distance, they kept in touch with whatever they could think of. Most days, they would Skype for as long as they were able to, and Tom almost forgot the large distance between them. Reality would make a comeback whenever Jordan would excuse himself to use the bathroom or anything, and Tom would almost cry out in relief whenever he’d come back. He loved every moment he spent with Jordan, and looked forward to the next time they’d chat whenever their calls ended. Tom decided to take the plunge and bought himself a ticket over to America, keeping it as a surprise for his boyfriend.
It wasn’t too long before Tom moved in with Jordan, and life couldn’t get any better. They’d become a constant in each others’ lives, and it was hard for Tom to picture life without Jordan.
No, that was a lie.
It was all too easy to picture his life without Jordan. One of these days, Jordan would say it like he always does, except that one day, it will be a lie. He couldn’t take it anymore, knowing that every day of his life was plagued with ‘what if’s’ and praying that they wouldn’t take his love away.
Some days, he wished that Jordan wasn’t his soulmate. At least then, Tom wouldn’t have to deal with any of this.
They had just gotten home from their date, and Jordan’s face was alight with joy and excitement. He’d been like that the whole time, and Tom couldn’t help but feel the same way. It didn’t help that the man’s laugh was contagious, either.
They had just gotten in when Jordan suddenly stopped, his face flushing red. “Tom- I-” Jordan looked like he was searching for the right words to say, a hand in his pocket. He remained like that for awhile, before his face dropped and he began to head back to the car. “I’ll be right back!”
“I’ll be here.” Tom replied automatically, his head spinning as he tried to make heads and tails of what was about to happen.
For years, the words written plainly on Tom’s chest drove him mad. Now, hearing them only grabbed at an empty space in his heart, as if the words tried to reach something that was no longer there. That night, only one of them was telling the truth, and he wished it was Jordan. He wasn’t sure if he would ever stop wishing it was Jordan. He wanted to move on, he really did.
But this time, his heart was broken, and he couldn’t bring himself to forget.

“God damn it Sparklez!” Tom yelled for the third time that night, although the angry expression he tried to muster fell apart at Jordan’s laughter. “Can’t you just play along for once?”
Jordan almost stopped laughing, then looked at the pathetic prank attempt Tom had set up. The door to their bedroom was slightly open, and he could see a shadow on the floor by it; he had probably set up a bucket of water to surprise him when he went it. Trouble was, his soulmate decided it was necessary for Jordan to say that he was going into their completely not booby trapped room before going inside. Which, due to the weird no-lying-to-your-soulmate thing going on, was literally impossible. He started laughing again.
Tom pouted, slightly lowering the camera he was using to record the whole ordeal. “C’mon Jordan! All you’ve gotta say is ‘I’m hot and I’m about to walk into our completely safe room!”
Jordan held back his laughter before replying, “I know there’s a bucket of water waiting to just fall on me there-”
“I swear there isn’t a bucket of water or anything, c’mon already!” Tom pleaded, pointing the camera back at him. “Please?”
Jordan was mildly surprised at the statement. “Well, I guess if you said it out loud I have to take your word for it.” he said, rolling his eyes.
Tom grinned and made a go on gesture with his free hand, and Jordan opened the door.
Immediately, he felt something hit his head, causing him to curse. He noticed the flood of petals on the floor, something that probably accompanied the bucket that smacked against his face.
“HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!” Tom yelled into his ear, shoving the camera into his face. Jordan recoiled, and to make things worse, he was red. Whether it was from being hit on the head with a bucket or realizing that he’d forgotten their anniversary, he wasn’t too sure.
“I know you’ve been busy and all with work, so I thought I could lighten up your mood with a cute little prank!”
Jordan was beaming at Tom, pulling him in for a quick kiss. They remained intertwined together, their foreheads against each other as Jordan said, “Thank you for this. Although I guess dinner would’ve been preferable to just a bucket and petals falling on my head-”
“Well…” Tom said, pulling away. He had a sly smile on his face, before gesturing to the rest of the room. Petals had formed what looked like a deformed heart on the bed, complete with lit candles.
“Goddammit, Tom.” Jordan said, flushing a deep shade of red.
“Is that a no then?”
Jordan grinned. “I didn’t say that.”
