#they came to a city #screencaps #(not my own)#j b priestley #googie withers #john clements #raymond huntley #renee gadd #a e matthews #mabel terry lewis #frances rowe #ada reeve #norman shelley #brenda bruce #ralph michael #1940s #sff #book adaptations #theatre #this is an odd but absolutely fascinating one #reviews agree that it's too static for cinema and that's completely fair: it is the play transposed without much motion added #it's static and talky; but it's also something quite different to anything i've seen before; the cast were all from the original theatre ru #so this is a chance to see a 1940s play in effect; J B Priestley looks at the possibility of a socialist utopia via 9 'ordinary'#assorted Brits magically transported there - a waitress; merchant seaman; cleaner; businessman; aristocrat etc & their reaction to it #the performances are great and it has a weird unearthly but earnest quality and yeah. it is not cinema #but i really rather loved it. and it made me have feels about the Beveridge Report; no film has ever done that before #it's very J B Priestley indeed #the film does have one difference from the book - a rather charming little bookending scene in which priestley himself is telling #this story as a fable to two young service men and women #(i watched it off the TV so i could only google for screencaps and not gif it. If I ever get my own copy i will. like. eventually.)
