Black Summer is a superhero deconstruction comic where the higher-order philosophizing about the limits of the superheroic mandate in the face of state violence very quickly gets upstaged by seven issues of increasingly over-the-top lovingly rendered gore and carnage. On one level this is dissatisfying and feels a bit like a cop out. On another level it’s very satisfying because the actual intended thesis of the book appears to be “well if a superhero killed the president for war crimes what other fucking thing do you think is going to happen afterwards, moron?”
