Lockdown criminal records to be erased but not yet
The government said it is considering expunging the criminal records of people who have violated lockdown regulations but it won’t do this now because it wants to curb the spread of COVID-19. Tens of thousands of people have criminal records since the State of Disaster was enacted almost a year ago. Police Minister Bheki Cele announced that about 20,000 people have been arrested for violating…

National Weatherman’s day is celebrated on February 5th of each year commemorating the birth of John Jeffries in 1744. Jeffries, one of America’s first weather observers, began taking daily weather observations in Boston in 1774 and he took the first balloon observation in 1784. This is a day to recognize the men and women who collectively provide Americans with the best weather, water, and climate forecasts and warning services of any nation.

On this day, January 7th, 1785 Frenchman Jean-Pierre Blanchard and American John Jeffries made history by crossing the English Channel in a gas balloon. Jeffries originally financed the flight hoping purchase a spot on the flight but Blanchard, being an egotist and not wanting to share the glory, tried very hard to keep Jeffries from joining him on the journey. Blanchard even went so far as to entrench himself and the balloon in Dover Castle. In response, Jeffries employed a squad of sailors to besiege the castle until a truce was made.
On the morning of January 7th, 1785, the balloon was set at the edge of Dover cliff and was finally launched at 1pm. However, the flight was not without peril; even after jettisoning most of the contraptions that Blanchard thought would help direct or steer the balloon, there was a very real risk that they would not make it across the channel. It actually came down to the two aeronauts tossing their coats and Blanchard throwing out his trousers. Two of the things they did keep were a bottle of brandy and bundle of letters, the first air mail.
They made it to France at 3pm and because they had to lose much of their equipment (including ropes and anchors) the only way they could stop long enough to let air out of the balloon was for Jeffries to hold tight to the top of a tree. In the end, Blanchard received much glory from Louis XVI, including a life pension, while Jeffries received nothing. Blanchard continued to be an active aeronaut and on January 9th, 1793, he made the first aerial flight in America, his 45th ascent.
This book, The Aeronauts: A History of Ballooning 1783-1903 is part of our Philip J. Hohlweck Collection but we also have the George Hardie Aerospace Collection where we can find resources for more ballooning posts.

Happy National Weatherperson's Day
National Weatherperson's Day, also known as National Weatherman's Day, is observed on February 5 primarily in the United States. It recognizes individuals in the fields of meteorology, weather forecasting and broadcast meteorology, as well as volunteer storm spotters and observers. It is observed on the birthday of John Jeffries, one of the United States' first weather observers who took daily measurements starting in 1774.
